Deeley gets a little help from his wife
There is a saying that behind every successful man there's a good woman and for John Deeley that certainly rings true.
The British Airways rider is back for his second attempt at the CD&P Grand Prix and has brought his wife Teresa along for the event.
"She is my support crew, my chief race psychologist and the person who is taking my spare wheels to the start," said Deeley, who will be competing in the Mens Open category, while his team mates will be in the Masters.
Teresa has only just got into the saddle and so is happy to take a back seat, so to speak.
"I have only just recently started racing and I have only two done two time trials so it's too soon for me to be doing this sort of thing.
"But you may see me next year," she said.
Deeley is coming to Bermuda in good form and is on a mission to better his performance from last year.
"It was my first time out here last year and I punctured on the road race and lost a lot of time so I had to come back this year and make up for that," he said.
His strengths come to the fore in the time trial which takes place tomorrow.
"The time trial is my favourite event but I have just learned they have shortened it from six miles to three miles which has disappointed me somewhat," he said. "However, it will mean I can race hard everywhere. Last year I got to the last climb just before the finish and the heat and the wind kind of got to me a little bit. This year I was going to temper the pace back a little bit so I had something left for the finish, but I don't think I will have that problem now."
Deeley said he was delighted to be able to come to Bermuda at the end of a long season.
"It's an opportunity to race in conditions that we just don't get at home," he said. "It's a beautiful island, the people are fantastic and it's a well put together event."
