Dillas is the ace of clubs

Jarryd Dillas took honours at the Fecchio Cup for the second consecutive year yesterday, wrapping up the title with an impressive final round of two-under-par 68 at Riddell's Bay. after struggling with an eight-over-par on Thursday.

The 17-year-old Bermudian rebounded from an eight-over par opening round to cruise to a four stroke victory over Canadian Stephen Hiscox.

Dillas finished the two rounds on 146, with Hiscox on 150 after rounds of 77 and 73. Bermuda's Sergio Edness was third on 151 with rounds of 80 and 71.

Winner of the women's division for the second year in a row was Ebonie Burgess who followed up her first round score of 71 with an identical round yesterday, giving her a two-round total of 142. The only other competitor in that division, Tariqah Walikraam, finished a distant second on 168.

It was a remarkable recovery for Dillas who last week gave a gallant effort in the Orange Bowl Junior Golf Championships in Florida where he challenged the early leaders before falling off the pace in the final two rounds.

Fierce winds affected his game on Thursday, but the youngster found the conditions more favourable yesterday.

"The weather was a big factor in the first round," he said. "The wind made it so hard hitting off the tees and putting. But I holed out better today, I was able to make some good putts.

"In the beginning I holed out well . . . I birdied two to go one under and I saved some good pars. I later birdied eight and eagled nine to go four under and that put me five up on Sergio Edness and three up on Steve Hiscox and then I just tried to concentrate and play solid golf to the green on the back nine."

But it was not all smooth sailing for the youngster as he admits to having run into somewhat of a hiccough on holes 16 and 17 when he made two bogeys.

"Overall, it was just a much better round for me compared to Thursday when the weather conditions were no comparison" said Dillas.

"Winning is always good and I am proud to be a winner for the second year in a row, especially when it is one of our major tournaments. I am particularly proud of the fact that it is my third junior title."

The only title currently escaping his grip is the Atlantic Junior Championships, a competition in which he has not competed in the past three years because it clashes with the Junior World Championships.

The three titles he holds in addition to the Fecchio Cup are the Glidden Bowl and Junior Match Play Championship.
