Dominicans book place in play-off

The Dominican Republic have been confirmed as the third and final team that will face off against Haiti and Bermuda at the National Sports Centre (NSC) next month.

The trio will compete in a Digicel Caribbean Cup play off that will ultimately decide the eighth and final spot in January?s finals to be held in Trinidad and Tobago.

And while national football coach Kyle Lightbourne is obviously delighted over the prospect of playing such a crucial series on home soil, the former English professional striker isn?t taking any team for granted at this late stage of the CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifying competition.

?The biggest challenge for us right now is going to be the first game, that is going to be our biggest challenge. We have to win that match whether it?s against Haiti or the Dominican Republic,? Lightbourne told .

?We cannot afford to focus our attention on only one team. We have to focus instead on that first match, and that?s the bottom line. We can?t afford to look too far ahead. We have to win that first match regardless who we play.?

Bermuda defeated Dominican Republic in the first round of the Digicel Cup in US Virgin Island last September, but have not faced off with Haiti since the 1992 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Incidentally, Lightbourne scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win against Haiti at the National Sports Centre as a member of Gary Darrell?s national squad that then lost the away match in the Caribbean 2-1.

?If we can play to our full potential then there?s no reason why we shouldn?t be successful ? especially playing at home in Bermuda,? Lightbourne said.

Following last week?s Digicel Group G qualifiers in Barbados the possibility existed of having the national team play a warm up match against Martinique as preparation for next month?s crucial play off.

Lightbourne, however, strongly opposes having the team compete in any warm up matches with the triangular series against Haiti and Dominican Republic tentatively scheduled to be held in only two weeks time.

?We just finished playing three games in five days (in Barbados). The ideal time to have warm up matches was before we went to Barbados,? Lightbourne argued.

?We can?t afford to pick up any more injuries in such a short period of time because time isn?t on our side at the moment.?

Meanwhile, CONCACAF are scheduled today to announce the venues for the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup, which will be played from June 6 to 24.
