Dandy Town Hornets are abuzz.

Ploughing through the Den on Sunday like a runaway locomotive, Hornets brushed aside defending league champions Devonshire Cougars without skipping a beat.

From the opening whistle Devarr Boyles? squad were a cut above their opponents in the green and gold with the home side flattered by the final 3-2 scoreline.

Town?s veteran striker Carlos Smith netted all three goals ? the first just 53 seconds into the match.

?That was exactly the type of start we were looking for against a Devonshire Cougars side that wasn?t as organised as they usually are. Carlos? goals were superlative and it was good to see him get a hat-trick. And to win in the manner we did was great,? said coach Boyles.

?I thought as the match wore on it seemed as though we had something extra and I don?t know what it was but if I did then I?d surely bottle it and save some for next time.?

Smith, though, was not the only Hornet to shine up front as towering forward Lashun Dill and Jared Peniston continued to impress. Both had a say in two of Smith?s goals.

?Lashun has good balance and shoots well with both feet. I thought he showed great speed against Cougars in the sense he was able to beat people off the dribble,? added Boyles.

?Maybe he?s just a few games away from putting it all together and the sooner the better because he?s rounding off into good form and what he gives us is something similar to the direct running Khano (Smith) used to provide. He certainly keeps defences honest along with Jared (Peniston).?

Then, of course, there?s the team?s unsung heroes.

?Dennis Zuill, Otis Steede and Kingsley Mundy are probably our most consistent performers. I think since we have paired Dennis with Kingsley they have not missed a beat defensively. Now they are starting to play football at the back,? said Boyles, who also singled out full back Ernest Signor and team skipper Maurice Lowe for special mention.

?Overall I think we are now seeing a better performance from the team. We are not just attacking with midfielders and forwards. We are also attacking with defenders.?

After getting the season off to a slow start, Town have come on in leaps and bounds ? especially since clinching a fifth Martonmere Cup title last month with victory over Somerset Trojans on the ?carpet?.

Hornets have not lost a match since October 29 when they went down 1-0 to the Trojans at Somerset Cricket Club.

Now with a trophy already in the bag, and their league and FA Cup hopes alive, Town switch their focus to a December 18 Friendship Trophy clash with Cougars at Somerset Cricket Club and to the Dudley Eve Trophy over the festive season.

Town won the inaugural Champions Cup last year ? an achievement that went a long way towards easing the grief of losing full back Randy Swan in a road traffic accident nearly a year ago.

The competition has now been re-named the Dudley Eve in memory of the late Bermuda Football Association administrator.

?We have already discussed about being in a position to control your own destiny, and honestly speaking I don?t think we are far off from where we had hoped to be at this stage of the season,? Boyles added.

?It would have been better had we got a result in one of those two games (league) we lost. But that?s all in the past and we have moved on. When we lost to North Village at the beginning of the season we were still in the initial stages changing from one system to something else. Now we are a bit further along the line like most teams are and seeing a bit more consistency in the execution of what we are asking our players to do.

?The policy (Champions Cup competition) last year was to rest, for lack of a better word, some of the players who had major minutes but we always look to put a team on the pitch we feel can get a result.?

And Boyles will have plenty of weapons to choose from among an arsenal that will be bolstered by the return of college players returning for the holiday break.

That list contains the likes of Jaqui Simons, Daniel Johnson, Brendon Minors and George Dyer jr.

?We?re anticipating the college players coming back and wanting and having the passion to play,? said Boyles.

?But we also have players here who haven?t had a lot of minutes on the pitch and so we also look to get them involved to make sure everyone is fresh, happy and producing because at the end of the day that?s what it?s all about.?
