FA Cup clash postponed as Colts seek time to recover

Tired legs have forced postponement of this Sunday's FA Cup only all-premier first round match between Devonshire Colts and PHC Zebras.

The game will now be played next Tuesday night at BAA Field.

It was learned yesterday that Colts, who would have had to have played three matches in the space of seven days, asked to have Sunday's game rescheduled. And after consultation between Colts, PHC and Bermuda Football Association officials, it was decided to honour the newly-crowned Martonmere Cup champions' request and have the match played at a later date.

"As it was a great deal of matches in a short period of time we decided to move the game to the Tuesday night in order to give Devonshire Colts a little more time to recover," said BFA league and competitions committee chairman Charles Clarke.

"They made a request and a decision was made and they were then notified that that particular game had been moved."

The switch will come as a relief to Colts who have played three matches over the last ten days. They suffered an early exit from the Friendship Trophy in midweek when they went down 1-0 to Devonshire Cougars in the clubs' second meeting in the space of 72 hours.

Colts also battled for 120 minutes against Zebras in the November 11 Martonmere Cup final.

"The extra couple of days will surely do us some good," said Colts' skipper Shannon Burgess.

"It will also give us extra time to prepare. If we had been forced to play on Sunday we probably wouldn't have had a chance to practice prior to the match.

"So it gives us a bit of time to prepare and we do have quite a few things we need to work on as was evident last night (Wednesday)."

Yesterday's announcement might also prove beneficial to the Zebras, who are struggling with early season injuries.

"It will certainly give us more time to rest which is always welcome," said Zebras coach Mark Wade.

"We were geared up to play on Sunday even though we still have a couple of players out and we were really just trying to gel the players who are stepping in."

In Commercial League action, Robin Hood defeated St.George's All-Stars 3-1 and not 5-0 as was previously reported in The Royal Gazette while Ricky Hill scored North Village Rams' consolation goal and not Ross Lambe.

The December 1 FA Cup first round match between Prospect and St. George's All-Stars has now been moved from Wellington Oval to St. David's. And the postponed October 26 Premier Division match between Boulevard and Dandy Town has been rescheduled for tomorrow night at BAA Field, beginning at 8 p.m.
