FA veterans to be honoured

Veterans from the inaugural FA Cup Final that was played in 1956 between BAA and Southampton Rangers will be officially honoured by Premier Alex Scott during a cocktail reception tomorrow at Camden.

The reception will officially kick off a host of events organisers have planned to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the prestigious competition.

Bermuda Football Association (BFA) executive Charles Clarke explained: ?On Sunday at the National Sports Centre (NSC) there will be a brief ceremony that will see the first finalist paraded onto the pitch, while the stadium itself will be decorated in the colours of the inaugural finalists (blue/white and green/white).?

The Bermuda Regiment Band will be hand at the NSC while those in attendance will also be entertained by Warner?s Gombeys.

?Warner?s Gombeys were present at the first final in 1956 at the Prospect Garrison,? Clarke added.

Local telecommunications giants Digicel will also host a Kick for Cash that will take place at half time during the men?s final involving defending cup holders North Village and Dandy Town.

?We encourage all of Bermuda to come out and help us to celebrate this milestone in the history of Bermuda football,? Clarke said.

Clarke headed up a special committee that included honorary BFA life president Charles Marshall, Maurice Hankey ? a member of BAA?s inaugural FA Cup winning team ? local sports historian Warrington (Soup) Zuill, BAA president John Doran and Southampton Rangers president and former Somerset Cup Match skipper John Tucker.

?These gentlemen have all worked diligently over the past few weeks with preparations for the 50th anniversary of the FA Challenge Cup,? Clarke said.

Meanwhile, cup holders Village can draw level with Somerset Trojans and PHC Zebras who share the record for the most overall FA Cup wins.

Zebras tied Trojans for the most wins (nine) when they defeated Dandy Town 2-1 at the NSC in 1991-92 FA Cup final, while Village moved to within striking distance when they shut out Hamilton Parish 2-0 in last season?s final at the Sports Centre.

To date only PHC, Social Club and Trojans have won the prestigious showpiece three years in succession.

Zebras were the first club to achieve the feat between 1959-60 and 1961-62. PHC have also appeared in 17 FA Cup finals, more than any other team in domestic football.

Village are also gunning to become the first club since Vasco Da Gama in 1997-98 to win the triple crown (League, FA Cup and Friendship Trophy).

Village won a first FA Cup in 1977-78, the same year they won a maiden triple crown.

Sunday will be Village?s tenth appearance in the FA Cup final and fifth in the past six years.

Hornets won a first FA Cup in 1986-87 and another in 2004. Sunday will be Town?s eighth overall appearance in the season-ending final.

Carlos Smith is the sole surviving member of Hornets? victorious 1987 FA Cup team that defeated PHC 1-0 in a replay.
