Final fitness test for cricketers
Bermuda?s national team cricketers were scheduled to undergo an intense fitness test at the National Sports Centre last night amid injury concerns to top players.
Physiotherapist Daniel Morgan was due to put squad members through a rigorous session at the Sports Centre before submitting individual physical assessments and analysis to Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) officials today.
Sources claimed earlier this week that Bermuda skipper Clay Smith had yet to fully recover from a knee injury and that his ability to lead the Island?s 2007 World Cup bid in Ireland in July remained in doubt.
Smith promptly dismissed the allegations, describing them as ?rubbish?.
?It?s ludicrous. I was injured last summer when I scored the most runs (representing Bermuda with an injured knee) and I have nothing to prove to anyone,? he told via e-mail.
The national team skipper topped the Island?s batting averages during last summer?s Americas Regional Championships and ICC Inter Continental Cup tournaments.
Smith then went where no other batsmen had been before, etching his name into the Cup Match history books as the first player to score three centuries in the annual mid-summer classic.
?I will be in Ireland,? Smith vowed. ?I have nothing to prove to anyone.?
Meanwhile, also reported to be on the squad?s injured list are Richard Basden (shoulder), Kwame Tucker (hamstring) and OJ Pitcher (toe).
Smith, Pitcher and Tucker all represented their respective clubs last weekend.
When contacted yesterday, national team coach Gus Logie declined to comment on any of the players? fitness.
A final squad of 14 will be picked this Saturday to represent Bermuda in what promises to be a rigorous trip to Ireland.
Following warm-up games in southern England in late June, Bermuda initially face five group games in just seven days in and around Belfast.
Their opening match is against hosts Ireland on July 1 followed by games against United Arab Emirates (July 2), Denmark (July 4), Uganda (July 5) and USA (July 7).
Bermuda depart for the UK on June 19.
