Fisher eases into semis

Sasha Fisher cruised into the semi-finals of the Caribbean 14-and-under Development Championships in St. Vincent yesterday.

The 14-year-old Bermuda Federation Cup player walloped Akisha Lowe of the host nation 6-0, 6-0 and will play Trinidad's Nicole Agostini in the last four.

The two Bermudian boys who qualified for the round of 16 after round-robin play both went out - but not without a fight.

John Masters was involved in an epic battle against Bradley Minors of St. Vincent.

Masters lost the first set 6-2, but won the second 6-1 but then found himself 5-3 down in the third.

He fought back to take a 6-5 lead, only to miss out on a match point in the 12th game, which Minors won to tie the set at 6-6 and force a tiebreaker.

First Masters forged ahead in the tiebreaker, taking a 5-3 lead, but then the Bermudian saved a match point to make it 6-6.

Masters was 7-6 up and then 8-7 down as the topsy-turvy battle attracted the attention of a clutch of spectators. Minors eventually edged the tiebreaker 10-8 to win 6-2, 1-6, 7-6.

Bermuda coach Howard Cross was impressed by Masters' fighting spirit.

"John was being aggressive all the way through and he gave it all he had," said Cross. "It was really a gladiator's game.

"He put so much passion into that game that he literally cried at the end. John did Bermuda proud."

Kris Frick lost to Surinam's Vitas Danduk 6-3, 6-3. Danduk had beaten Frick on Tuesday in round-robin play as well.

Cross said: "Kris played very well and he's only 12 so he's got a couple more years at this level.

"I'm really happy with the way Sasha is playing. She's cruising at the moment."

Ashley Brooks failed to make it through to the main draw, but will play off for places nine through 15 today. Frick and Masters will play off for places nine through 12.

Brooks and Fisher won by default in the doubles quarter-finals and will play in the last four today.

Frick and Masters won their doubles match yesterday to qualify for the boys' quarter-finals. They beat Ray Ward and James Ingram of Barbados, 6-2, 6-2.
