Five-star Town into semis

Dandy Town Hornets swarmed upon a rudderless Boulevard to emerge victorious in this seven-goal Martonmere Cup Group B shootout to advance into the semi-finals of the competition for the second year in succession.

Though appearing a bit rusty in the opening minutes and falling behind to Shaki Crockwell?s early strike, Hornets turned it up a notch or two and zeroed in on the target like a heat-seeking missile, notching five unanswered goals in the space of 29 minutes to completely floor their cross-town rivals.

Town could not have asked for easier pickings as this contest was all but over three minutes before the half when Chris Anderson headed home Seion Darrell?s pinpoint cross at the back post to give Hornets a three-goal cushion for good.

Anderson and former Blazer Michael Parsons both netted braces while the hard-working Lashun Dill also added his name to the scoresheet.

Ricky Saltus grabbed Boulevard?s second -goal after 40 minutes.

Town will now meet Somerset Trojans next Friday night in a match to determine the Group B winners, while Blazers will have to revisit the drawing board and try to figure things out before the league campaign kicks off early next month.

Blazers must have felt like kicking themselves after Angelo Simmons? 11th minute penalty kick was saved by the fast-reacting Cymande Davis.

Indeed, this proved to be the real turning point in the match as Hornets took full advantage of Boulevard?s missed opportunity by finding their way to goal with regularity.

?That was a big save for us tonight and I guess you can say Cymande came through for us again,? Town coach Devarr Boyles told afterwards.

?But overall tonight I thought the game was easy for us, even when we were losing. We scored some really good goals tonight, but outside of that it we did not play pretty football.

?I thought whenever we had possession of the ball we did not do the right things.?

Town fell behind only seconds into the match when sloppy defensive work provided the alert Crockwell with the simple task of steering the ball across the line from yards out.

And before the euphoria had rubbed off the Blazers express appeared to have gathered even more momentum when Crockwell went tumbling in the box and referee Anthony Francis did not hesitate to point to the spot.

Simmons? spot kick, however, was easily thwarted by the agile Davis.

Two minutes later, Town were back on even terms when Parson?s partially-saved effort still had enough heat to trickle across the line under the body of Blazers? stand-in ?keeper Nathan Darrell who had earlier palmed a Jared Peniston humdinger over the bar.

Before Blazers could figure out where they had gone wrong, Town again took advantage of their opponent?s porous defence, this time Parsons unleashing a wicked drive from the fringe of the 18-yard box which soared into the top right-hand corner past the hapless ?keeper.

?The adjustment that we made was to bring somebody else inside with Michael (Parsons) and that allowed us to play a bit more football,? Boyles added.

Dill then capitalised on yet another defensive lapse on Blazers? part, firing in a rebound from an angle to send his team?s healthy following located behind the northern goal over the edge.

But Town were not done just yet.

The versatile Anderson, clearly enjoying his new role in attack, notched Hornets? fourth from the penalty spot after the diminutive Jahmari Samuels was blown for pushing in the box.

However, an unmarked Saltus pulled one back for Blazers against the run of play with a fierce left-footed hook that took a slight deflection as it soared beyond Davis? reach.

But Blazers? joy was shortlived as Anderson, unlucky not to have grabbed a deserved treble, rounded off a seven-goal first-half by planting his header in at the back post to kill of Blazers? Martonmere Cup hopes.

?Make no mistake about it . . . Chris is going to score some goals this season and I am happy for him because he has made the sacrifice over the past two seasons by playing down the back for us,? Boyles added.

?But now it?s turn to play up front and this was his reward tonight. ?

The only setback Town suffered on the night was having to play the final four-minutes of the match with ten-men when Dennis Zuill was helped off the pitch after coming out on the worse end of a midfield tackle with Blazers? sub Jahmel Samuels.

Other than that, Town were never really bothered by a Boulevard side still coming to grips with the loss of several key players, among them Parsons who came back to haunt his former team-mates in a big way with a 16th minute thunderbolt which scorched the back of the net. : R.Broadbelt, T.Trott, Jah.Samuels (capt), M.Trott, Jahmari Samuels (P.Puckering, 65 mins), D.Warren (D.Rogers, 78 mins), C.Simmons, A.Simmons, M.Gibbons, S.Crockwell, R.Saltus (Jahmel.Samuels, 57 mins): C.Davis, S.Darrell, E.Signor, M.Lowe (capt), D.Zuill, M.Parsons, W.Place (A.Thomas, 67 mins), O.Steede, C.Anderson (T.Douglas, 67 mins), L.Dill, J.Peniston (K.Butterfield, 67 mins).T.Trott, Jahmari Samuels (Boulevard); S.Darrell (Town).S.Crockwell (Boulevard); C.Anderson (Town).: A.Francis.
