Young athletes from the Flyers Track Club snared five medals when they competed in the recent Northwest Track and Field Classic in Miami, Florida.

A group of 11 competitors from Flyers took part in the meet along with some 150 teams from the Caribbean and USA, and besides the medal haul they also registered four personal bests.

Ashley Berry placed first in the 3000 metres and second in the 1500 metres while Megan Berry also struck gold, winning the 1500 metres in a personal best time of 5:27:57.

Akilah Bremar romped to first place in the heats of the 400 metres and then finished second in the final, recording a PB of 59.9 seconds as well as second in the 800 metres.

Darico Clarke was another to record a career best time, clocking 53.41 to win his 400 metres heat and then placing fifth in the final.

Keshuntay Graham enjoyed a good weekend, making it through to the finals in the 200 metres with a PB of 26.41 and also qualifying for the semi-finals of the 100 metres.

Flyers? girls narrowly missed a top three place in the 4x100 metres relay, moving into contention for a medal but then fumbling the baton, a mistake which left them in fourth place.

On the final day of the meet athletes had to contend with rain and thunderstorms and such was the enormous entry it took six hours to complete the 200 metre heats with each age group contesting between eight and 10 heats.

Baseball?s all-stars on show

The 2006 youth baseball season culminates this weekend with the much anticipated East versus West All-Star Games to be held at the Kindley Community Playing Field in St.David?s and Bernard Park on Sunday.

The Youth Athletic Organisation (YAO) Baseball League from the east end of the Island will take on the Bermuda Youth Sports Programme (BYSP) from the west end in the final games of the season.

Rookie and League and Little League fixtures will take place in St.David?s while Senior League games will take place at Bernard Park.

The East against West All-Star Games include representatives from all of the teams in both the YAO and BYSP Leagues. This Sunday?s activities will feature six games in total.

Matthews off to fast start

This year?s American Airlines Bowling Spectacular got underway on Tuesday night with last year?s runner-up in both the scratch and handicap divisions, Damien Matthews, showing the rest of the field that he intends to go one better this year.

In the scratch division, Matthews produced a series of 618, rolling games of 221, 245 and 152 ? coming in first ? and was followed by Dean Lightbourn (615) and Clyde Burgess (595) respectively.

Competition was even fiercer in the handicap division and it was Burgess who came out on top with a winning series of 712 thanks to games of 240, 230, and 242.

Second place went to Winston Lottimore with 709 and third to Aesop Smith with 697.

The qualifying rounds of the tournament will take place every Tuesday evening for the next eight weeks at 7 p.m..

To qualify for the finals, competitors must play in a minimum of six of the nine weekly tournaments and place in the top 15 in any one week. The winner will receive AA tickets to any destination in the US, Canada or the Caribbean while second place will receive free tickets to Miami.
