Family, friends, colleagues and fellow cricketers all paid their final respects to former St. George's Cup Match off-spinner Travis Smith who was laid to rest last Friday at a funeral service at St. Peter's Church in St.George's.

Smith, 26, was a well-known cricketer who burst on to the Cup Match scene at Somerset in 2002 when he became the first bowler to claim five wickets in each innings since Eugene Hansey in 1969 ? and the first to do so as a colt.

Smith's ten wickets for 130 runs also earned him the coveted Cup Match MVP Award.

The St.George's bowler was pronounced dead at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after colliding with a car at the entrance of Terceira's gas station on North Shore Road, Devonshire on the evening of July 6.

Smith represented St.George's in three Cup Match classics before eventually being dropped in favour of a seamer in 2005.

Following an hour-long funeral service at St.Peter's, the coffin of the late cricketer was carried to a waiting hearse by a team of pallbearers consisting of St.George's' Cup Match trio Lionel Cann, Charlie Marshall and OJ Pitcher and Somerset's Janeiro Tucker, Hasan Durham and Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock.

According to one onlooker "thousands" turned up to pay their last respects.

"He certainly had a good send-off, that's for sure," a long-time friend told .

Smith, son of former St.George's Colts striker Noel (Sub) Smith, attended St.George's Preparatory and Warwick Secondary schools locally before successfully completing studies abroad at Drake Tech in Huntsville, Alabama.
