Forties' loss hands title to Trappers
Leg Trappers sensationally clinched the Commercial Cricket League title by one point when Forties, who began the day six points clear, lost by one run yesterday to nine-man West Indian Association in near darkness at Shelly Bay.
Leg Trappers, the only team to finish the league season unbeaten, romped to a ten-wicket victory over lowly Devonshire Stars at the Royal Naval Field to take the crown by a single point from WIA. Forties finished three points further back in third place after one of the closest races in years.
No. 8 batsman John Ray, who kept Forties' hopes alive with a valiant knock of 31 as wickets tumbled around him, fell to the first ball of the 40th over at 7.52 p.m. with two runs needed for victory when he mistimed a drive against Junior Watts and spooned an easy catch to substitute fielder Huron Vidal at mid-off, having added 15 for the final wicket with Brian Holdipp. A tie would have given Forties the title.
Earlier, WIA capitalised on butter-fingered Forties to make 138 in 41.2 overs, useful contributions coming from Randy Liverpool (23), Richard Austin (22 not out) and skipper Barry Richards who made 21 after being dropped in the first over. Veteran Allan Lee (three for 19), David Jarrett (two for 17) and Ray (two for 28) were Forties' leading bowlers.
Forties were jolted by losing skipper Gordon Campbell and Gladwin Ingham cheaply to smart catches but despite a fighting knock of 36 by opener David Stoneham they never got on top of a WIA attack spearheaded by opening pace bowlers Stan Francis (four for 27 from 15 overs) and Adrian McLean (three for 46).
Skipper Derek Smith made 35 in Devonshire Stars' 171 for nine in a match reduced to 35 overs a side because of rain, but David Hosier (85 not out) and an unbeaten 71 by Gary Knight spurred Trappers to an emphatic victory in the 28th over - and they were able to celebrate their second league title in four seasons minutes after word of Forties' dramatic second defeat of the season against WIA reached them.
Stars' defeat, coupled with a comfortable victory by Jamaican Association over St. David's at Lord's, consigned them to bottom spot.
