Gerard stuns second seed

Yuko Gerard, playing a flawless match, pulled off a major upset during action in the Argus Open tennis tournament over the weekend when she toppled second seed Tracey Berrell 6-4, 6-1 at the Tennis Stadium.

In a contest that was close for the first eight games, the big break came in the ninth game when Berrell appeared to gain a bout of nerves, thus allowing her opponent to gain the initiative with a crucial break and then held for the set. After that, it was all downhill with the second set lasting only 22 minutes.

Meanwhile, Eugene Simmons and Karl Roberts continued towards their eventual meeting in the Men's A division when each recorded straight set victories in third round play.

Roberts, returning to competitive action after years away from the courts, defeated Denton Leader 6-3, 6-3, while Simmons ousted Craig Bethune 6-1, 6-3.

Over in the Men's B section, Roberts pulled off a major upset when he defeated 14-year-old top seed Kris Frick 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in a contest that was far more entertaining and exciting than the scoreline would indicate.

"I thought that I was in with a good chance during the early going," said young Frick, "but he (Roberts) proved to be a bit more consistent and this put additional pressure on me and I played a few bad shots which turned out to be costly."

In another upset the brother combination of Earl and Eric Leader stunned top seeds and favourites John Moore and Martin Zolnai, coming from a set down to take the third round match 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, while young John Masters moved into the spotlight with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over third seed Ben Lau in the Men's B division.
