Gibbons praised for Stars contribution

Western Stars Sports Club?s executive has some new members following last Monday?s annual general meeting.

Former assistant secretary Denise Hollis has replaced Gershon Gibbons as vice-president while Sheena Paynter has succeeded Hollis as assistant secretary. Belinda Wellman and Lloyd Christopher were returned as treasurer and assistant treasurer respectively.

President Calvin Blankendal and secretary Shawnette Perott?s posts were not contested as they each have a year remaining in their three-year terms.

During the proceedings, Blankendal lauded the contribution of outgoing vice-president Gershon Gibbons, stating the latter singlehandedly revitalised Stars? junior cricket programme which now attracts about 20 youngsters, aged ten to 14, each Friday evening.

Gibbons, a member of Stars? Premier Division cricket outfit, is also overseeing the development of the club?s cricket training facility.

The president also took the opportunity to highlight a number of sporting successes in the past season, including winning the Under-seven soccer Pee Wee tournament, the Under-11 tournament, the Under-13 league title (undefeated) and being runners-up in the knockout battle.

The senior team, Dandy Town Hornets, clinched the Champions Cup at Christmas and narrowly lost out to Devonshire Cougars in the Premier League.

Dandy Town Roots won the Commercial B division, scoring 185 goals.

On the cricket pitch, Stars were the 2004 Belco Cup champions and added the One-Day league title to their trophy chest.

For the coming year, the St. John?s Road organisation has certain objectives, in particular attaining a major corporate sponsor, continuing club renovations and installing security cameras to improve the ground?s safety.

Officials lamented the tragic passing of defender Randy Swan who died last December after a horrific car accident.
