Goater foiled by late penalty

Shaun Goater was denied a winning start to the season with his new club, Reading, when the First Division side conceded a last-minute penalty at Ipswich Town on Saturday.

Goater, who admitted last week he wasn't quite up to match fitness, was substituted by boss Alan Pardew in the 68th minute with Reading leading 1-0, courtesy of midfielder Steven Sidwell's 59th minute strike.

And it appeared the Royals would hang onto that lead and collect all three points until defender Graeme Murty was adjudged to have brought down Jim Magilton in the box in the 90th minute.

Midfielder Tommy Miller stepped up to convert the spot kick and salvage a point for Ipswich.

Reading played the final 12 minutes with 10 men after defender Nicky Shorey was dismissed for a professional foul.

Goater, playing against his former boss at Manchester City, Joe Royle, had few chances to score.
