Golf hopefuls take on US counterparts
Top junior players from the United States will be taking on Bermuda's best in a new tournament in the Spring.
The Bermuda Junior Golf Association has announced the introduction of the Future Collegian World Tour (FCWT) Bank Of Bermuda International Championships. The tournament will take place over the Easter weekend.
The event will be held at Mid Ocean Club and has been made possible thanks to a $25,000 donation from the Bank of Bermuda.
The top 10 local golfers will be rewarded for their efforts with an automatic exemption and qualification in future FCWT events on the US circuit.
Tournament director, Blake Marshall hopes the championship will become an annual event.
"Junior golf is excited about hosting the first and hopefully an annual International championship on the junior circuit," said Marshall. "We are expecting around 78 players in the field of which 50 will be overseas representatives.
"The reason why we decided to pursue this endeavour was primarily because of the high costs of sending delegations abroad to gain experience.
"We thought perhaps that we could channel our resources and energy towards staging the event here, bringing in overseas competition and letting them compete against our local youngsters.
"One of the benefits that the local golfers will have is that the top 10 members of the Junior Golf Association will get exemption into future FCWT events in the US, so this is definitely a tremendous boost for Junior golf and these particular youngsters."
