Goodwill heads for thrilling finale
Bermuda?s Goodwill Golf Championships are shaping up for a thrilling finale with just four shot separating six clubs in the net division as they head into today?s fifth and final round.
St. Charles out of Winnipeg continue to set the pace but the team of professional Cory Kartusch and amateurs Oliver Plett, Charlie Spring and Dominic Dirisio had their advantage slashed to just one shot yesterday as they carded 64 at cold and windy Port Royal.
Today they step out at Riddell?s Bay knowing it will likely take a much lower round if they?re to hold off the challenge of Lake Sunapee and Timberlake Pointe who yesterday returned superb rounds of net 57 (13 under par) at Belmont Hills and Tucker?s Point respectively.
With a four-round total of 43-under-par 238, they both sit just one shot behind St. Charles with North Shore another stroke back on 42 under par.
Belmont Hills ?A?, led by their touring pro and current Bermuda Open champion Michael Sims, are the closest of the local teams in the charge for net honours, sitting in eighth place after a 60 at Port Royal yesterday.
But Sims and co. are six off the pace and will be pressed to make up that ground today.
While challenging for the net title, Lake Sunapee out of New Hampshire have all but wrapped up the gross division following an excellent 62 at Belmont Hills yesterday.
Professional Rich Parker with amateurs Douglas Homan, Shane MacDonald and Joe Willey, now hold a five-shot lead over over The National ?B? team and Belmont Hills ?A?.
Delroy Cambridge?s North Shore team of Eddie Marshall, Leon Nearon and Michael De La Hunty hold a similar healthy advantage in the battle for senior team gross honours.
They lead by six shots after a 69 at Tucker?s Point yesterday which took them to 17-under-par 264. Their closest rivals are The Alpine Club out of Texas who returned an impressive 67 at Tucker?s Point yesterday to move into second.
Alpine are led by Roy Pace with amateurs Gino Kelly, Mason Deladfield and Bob Rex completing the quartet.
In the senior net division, Timberlake Point Club from Florida with professional Ron Nicol and team-mates Frank MacLaughlin, Joseph D?amato and Gus Klein, hold a one-shot lead over North Shore.
Timberlake currently sit on 238 (-43) and North Shore at 239 (-42) with Ed Whalley?s Bear Hill still in the chase at 241 (-40).
Meanwhile, the consistent Tim Conley, winner of more professional titles in Bermuda than any other visitor, staked his claim for the individual title yesterday, posting 19 points in the stableford competition while leading the Diamondback Club from Florida at Tucker?s Point.
Conley now has 73 points, two ahead of Sims, Amelia Island?s Ron Philo and Lake Sunapee?s Rich Parker.
Belmont Hills? Brian Morris continues to chase Sims for local honours as he remains in the hunt with 68 points.
Cambridge leads the senior division with a four-round total of 75, seven ahead of Donny Jarvis from the Nassau CC in New York.
Today?s final round will be followed by a prize-giving banquet at the Fairmont Southampton.
