Hamstring fear curtails reserve run-out

I only managed 45 minutes of reserve team action on Tuesday night after I began to feel my hamstring.

We were playing West Bromwich Albion at Hyde United and I was up front alongside Jon Macken.

Unfortunately, after about 20 minutes of the opening half I began to feel some discomfort and at the break I decided it would be best if I came off so as not to aggravate the situation.

The last thing I wanted to do was continue and injure myself and as we don't have a match in the Premiership until the weekend after next, because of international fixtures, it made more sense to allow myself time to recover.

The club didn't want to take the risk of me playing on either as we are down on strikers at the moment and with it being late in the season it's best to be cautious.

I had some treatment on it yesterday and the prognosis was good, the physio saying he was really confident about it.

He massaged it after I came off and the tightness has gone and it is now really relaxed, which is a good sign. As a result he feels that I could be back in action fairly shortly.

The reserve team has another game tomorrow and one on Monday and I would hope to be available for the latter one if everything is OK.

I don't think it's necessary to play on Friday, I would be better off doing a bit of training and ensuring everything was fine and then step it up from there.

I managed my longest run out in the first team for some time on Saturday when we played Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Unfortunately, the result - 5-0 - was a disappointing one.

We were 2-0 down at the break and a decision was taken to bring off Robbie Fowler and replace him with me. He was struggling with a shoulder injury and while we were in the dressing room the gaffer said to me I was coming on.

I wanted to go on, do myself justice, try and make a difference and give the gaffer something to think about.

Unfortunately, when your 2-0 down after 45 minutes that is somewhat difficult.

The players were low on confidence and we were playing as individuals rather than as a team. Chelsea, on the other hand, were gaining in confidence and that, coupled with how we were playing, increased the likelihood of us losing by an even bigger margin and that was what happened.

I did have one chance shortly after coming on. The ball came across and went through a few players' legs and took me a little by surprise. I took a touch and unfortunately it got stuck between my feet. When I readjusted and took another touch, I knocked it too far in front of me, could not get a shot off and a defender came in and cleared it.

Although I only played for one half I was as disappointed as everyone else at the end.

I wanted to have a positive impact, but no one, me included, can say they did that.

The criticism from the manager at the end was just as relevant for me as for those who had played for the whole 90 minutes.

Originally, we were going to be given some time off as we have a break between games but that decision was soon reversed after Saturday's performance.

That's football. One minute you are up there riding high and then you have games like that. You get days off when you do well and you think `I'll have that' but this is the other side of the coin.
