Hamstring pull dashes Hurdle?s hopes

Kevin Hurdle?s dreams of playing on a winning Cup Match team and also playing on home soil at Somerset Cricket Club will have to wait at least another year.

The Social Club and Bermuda national team fast bowler pulled a hamstring while bowling during Saturday?s final trial match at Somerset and was later deemed unfit to play in this week?s classic at the same venue.

Hurdle has made two appearances in Cup Match so far in his career, on each occasion playing on a losing team at Wellington Oval.

Chairman of Somerset selectors Mark Trott said although the pacer?s experience would be missed, his fellow committee members had faith in his young replacement, Malachi Jones.

?To lose a player such as Kevin who has already played in two Cup Matches is a setback,? Trott told

Prior to suffering the injury, Hurdle appeared to have comfortably retained his spot after claiming two wickets for 19 runs during a fiery opening four-over spell.

?He bowled at a terrific level consistently right on the money with a lot of fire,? Trott added. ?You could see that he was really into it and to lose his services from that point of view is sort of a setback.

?But then again it also made our job a lot easier because we had other options and the bottom line was that in the end we went with the players that we felt could do the job.?

Hurdle returned to the Island this week to participate in Saturday?s final trial after completing a playing stint with Folkestone CC in the UK.

The veteran fast bowler debuted in 1997 as a colt on Dexter Basden?s Somerset team who were beaten by nine wickets and was also a member of the West Enders? team that lost by 27 runs last summer.

Somerset coach Winston Reid noted: ?On Saturday I thought Kevin bowled with a lot of fire and you need that kind of fire in Cup Match ? especially if St.George?s are going to have a colt opening the innings.

?This is not to say that we do not have others who can do the job, but Kevin will be missed because I thought he bowled a bit quick and would have been an asset to us.

?But we lost him, and will have to move on and still try and play to the best of our ability.?

Somerset wicketkeeper Kwame Tucker was also ruled out of the classic last week after suffering a hamstring pull during the Stanford 20/20 Tournament in Antigua on July 21.
