Hockey team begin CAC build-up

It will not be sun, surf or carnival the Bermuda national ladies field hockey team will seek once they touch down in Trinidad tomorrow.

Rather they'll be sweating it out on the pitch as they begin preparations for next summer's foray to the CAC Games.

The local women embark on a week of intense training with three matches scheduled against the Trinidad national team and one involving the Trinidad under-19 side.

However, Bermuda will first have to come to grips with playing on Astroturf, which is not featured as yet at any of the Island's sporting facilities.

Team manager Jenny Burrell said Bermuda were expected to win, although results would not be as important to the coaching staff as the opportunity to view and analyse players.

"The main reason we're going to Trinidad is the Astroturf, as you know we don't have any in Bermuda, so we're looking to get some experience on turf," said Burrell. "We've played and beaten Trinidad once before, so we're hoping to repeat the same. We have a different squad, a younger squad now and we want them to get some experience playing as a group.

"We want to see how the girls measure up, make reports, and see who should be considered for the final squad next year."

Key players for Bermuda include midfielder Elizabeth Osborne, goalkeeper Alex Lewis, defenders Caroline Black and Sharmini Thomotherma, while Megan Spurling and Erica Frith spearhead the attack.

The team return home July 4.
