Hood sound early warning
COMMERCIAL DIVISION A
Robin Hood 2 MR Onions 1
Robin Hood kicked off their 2001-2002 defence of the Commercial League just as they ended last season . . . by winning.
While not much should be judged by first week action, the victory may yet prove vital as they sounded a warning with a 2-1 triumph over an MR Onions side that stands as one of the chief challengers to the 'A' Division crown.
Shane Brown got the champions off to a splendid start, notching a sixth minute strike, which carried through to the second half, when Duncan Ashworth equalised in the 52nd minute. The advantage was restored two minutes later when Brian Fubler connected, and Hood held on for the win.
Key West 7 Cable & Wireless 0
Key West Rangers made an auspicious debut among the ranks of the 'A' Division while handing fellow promotees Cable and Wireless - formerly Exiles - a miserable first outing with this runaway victory at St. John's Field.
Des Minors led the goal parade for the home side with two scores, while five players netted one apiece - with Ricky Mallory, Richard Wilson, Sergio Griffin, Arnold Todd and Chad Brimmer doing the honours.
BAA Wanderers 0 Lobster Pot 3
Lobster Pot opened their account with a well earned 3-0 triumph over former Commercial kings BAA Wanderers.
Troy Berkeley put Pot ahead with a 30th minute strike and he and Martin McHugh further sealed the deal with a pair late in the second-half.
Vasco Mariners 2 PHC Raiders 1
Vasco Mariners came from behind to down PHC Raiders 2-1 in this fiercely contested match.
Former PHC star midfielder Brian (Bulla) Anderson put Raiders ahead after 14 minutes, but this lead was erased a minute prior to the break as Joe Cunha found the net.
Joe Barroso scored what turned out to be the winner four minutes into the second half.
Tuff Dogs 2 North Village Rams 1
Goals from Nathan Brown and Jamal Lovell aided Tuff Dogs in their quest for victory over North Village Rams at Wellington Oval.
Rams reply came from the boot of former Bermuda international Kenny Thompson.
Commercial Division B
Prison Officers 8 Prospect/Fire 3
Any notions Prospect/Fire - formerly Fire Services - had of having an easier go-round among the lower reaches after being relegated last season were summarily dismissed as they were banished 8-3 by Prison Officers at Malabar.
Reginald Pitcher scored twice for Officers, while Ed Lightbourne, Millard Rawlins, A.Scott, Richards, and an own goal by David Bird accounted for the remainder. D.Kimmersley, P.Fenwick and Neil Tuhmacliffe tallied for the losers.
Pest Control 4 Dev. All-Stars 2
Like Prospect/Fire, Devonshire All-Stars were rudely welcomed to the ranks of Division 'B' with a 4-2 pasting at the hands of Bermuda Pest Control.
After taking an early lead through Kenny Dill, All-Stars were stunned by two quick strikes on either side of the interval from E.Spence and C.Bascome.
They recovered to level matters again through Jeff Richardson, but were finally laid to rest as T.Crockwell and H.Young each tallied in the dying stages.
Valley 6 Dockyard Falcons 1
A Kevin Isaac hat-trick spearheaded Valley to a 6-1 shellacking of Dockyard Falcons.
Substitute Roger Hall added two goals and Eddie Smith one to complete the scoring, as Devaugh Dill notched Falcons' lone reply.
D.Lions 3 St. Geo. All-Stars 5
St. George's got off to a successful start with this 5-3 hammering of Devonshire Lions at the Den.
The east enders shared the scoring load around with Fred Hall, Tear Carlington, Morris O'Brien, Cal Rayner and Milton Jones each finding the net.
Anthony Amory and Arthur Sinclair (two) tallied for Lions.
Somerset Extros 12 Wolves 0
In what was a contest in name only, Extros dished out a merciless beating upon visiting Wolves, netting six goals either side of the interval.
Two players scored hat-tricks, with Michael Corday and Everett Wellman both scoring three times, while Stevie Riley came off the bench to score twice. Gladstone Robinson, Donnie Simmons, Lloyd Telford and H.Darrell completed the massacre with single strikes.
