Indoor ace Bascome reaches 1,000 points

Veteran indoor soccer star David Bascome notched up the 1,000th point of his career in the Baltimore Blast?s 12-5 victory over the St. Louis Steamers over the weekend.

Bascome, who is 14th in all-time scoring in the Major Indoor Soccer League after 15 seasons in the shortened version of the game, had a goal and two assists in the comfortable victory to push him past the milestone.

The 35-year-old Bermudian international has had a stellar career in the indoor league, appearing in the All-Star game on five occasions and racking up four 100-plus point seasons although he was forced to wait until 2003 to claim his first championship.

Bascome scored in the second quarter to push his team 3-2 ahead of the league newcomers at the 1st Mariner Arena and then his second assist of the night, setting up Robbie Aristodemo in the third quarter, was enough to push him past the magic 1,000 points barrier ? something only 13 other players have achieved in league history.

The Blast, who won the league back-to-back in 2002 and 2003, are now 2-0 for the year.

Last year?s Rookie of the Year John Barry Nusum, meanwhile, recorded only an assist as his side went down 6-3 to the defending champions Milwaukee Wave on Friday night at the Wachovia Spectrum.

He set up defender Drew Kopp to equalise at 1-1 before his side fell away. They are now 1-1 for the season and face the St. Louis Steamers this weekend.

In England, Shaun Goater was an unused substitute as Southend went down 2-0 to Nottingham Forest in front of nearly 20,000 spectators.

An own goal by Che Wilson and a strike from Nicky Southall separated the sides with Goater having to watch from the bench as manager Steve Tilson chose to start with Wayne Gray instead.

The Shrimpers remain third in League One.
