Island duathlon trio excel in US
Three of Bermuda's leading athletes enjoyed outstanding performances at the US National Duathlon Championships in Alpharetta, Georgia yesterday.
Marathon Derby champion Kavin Smith teamed up with cyclist Lynn Patchett as they decimated the field to take overall team honours in the mixed event, while Ricky Sousa place third overall in the individual 40-45 age group.
Both team and individual races consisted of a 10K run, followed by a 40K cycle, finishing with a 5K run.
Smith got the Bermuda pair off to a flying start as he led from the gun with Patchett further widening that lead on the cycle.
They eventually clocked one hour, 56 minutes and 31 seconds which was a massive 30 minutes ahead of their nearest male-female rivals.
“To be honest it wasn't the strongest of team fields,” admitted Patchett last night. “But for my part, this was just the work-out I needed before competing in the Island Games next week.”
Patchett will be a member of the the cycling team when Bermuda compete in the Games in Guernsey for the first time.
Sousa's individual time yesterday was one hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds which he believed was his best over this distance.
Patchett noted that both she and Sousa had already qualified for the Duathlon Worlds later this year.
“We'd qualified prior to this event but we just wanted more competition to see where we are at this stage, before competing at the end of August,” she added.
