Island trio find the going tough at ?wet, wet? Worlds
Bermuda?s trio of Ebonie Burgess, Laura Robinson and Kim Botelho endured another frustrating day at the women?s World Amateur Team Golf Championships in Puerto Rico yesterday on a day when conditions continued to worsen.
After two days of torrential rain at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, fairways were drenched and bunkers full of water, and last night there was even some doubt the tournament would be completed with the forecast of more rain.
Having posted an opening round score of 166 on Wednesday at the Ocean course, yesterday again saw the Island contingent struggle at the par 72, 6,956 yard River Course where the lift and replace rule came into play because of the bad weather.
The trio posted 167 to finish day two of the 72-hole tournament tied with Turkey in 36th position in a remaining field of 48 teams. Both Ecuador and Cayman withdrew.
Burgess, a student at the Leadbetter Golf Academy in Florida, produced the lowest round for Bermuda as she carded a nine-over-par 81.
Despite a triple bogey at the second hole and a double at the par-five 15th, Burgess proved to be by far the most consistent of the trio as she picked up a birdie at the the par-five fourth hole and made par on ten of the 18 holes to make a slight improvement on her opening round score of 82.
Her team-mates found the going particularly tough with former pro Botelho carding a 14-over-par 86 and Robinson two shots back on 88.
Botelho, who celebrates her 30th birthday tomorrow, double bogeyed the par-five eighth and the par-four 17th while a triple bogey at the par-five 17th sealed a miserable day. Robinson fared no better, suffering a pair of double and triple bogeys.
?The conditions were really very difficult,? said team manager Eric Robinson, the father of Laura.
?It hasn?t stopped raining for two days and the forecast is for more. The event may well have to be cut down to 54 holes.?
Canada currently hold a three-shot lead over d Sweden with the US a further shot behind.
