Island trio improve at team Worlds
A new day and a new course brought improved fortunes for Bermuda at the Women?s World Amateur Strokeplay Championship in South Africa yesterday.
The team of Laura Robinson, Ebonie Burgess and Katyna Rabain finished the day in 33rd place out of 42 teams, one place up from where they were after round one.
Once again, Robinson carried the Bermudian charge, shooting an excellent two-over 74 at the Stellenbosch Golf Club, a round which included two birdies and four bogeys.
And shrugging off the disappointment of a mediocre first round on the nearby De Zalze golf course, Burgess came in not far behind Robinson with a four-over 76.
Rabain, meanwhile, who admitted last night her game was far from its best at the moment, shot a 15-over par 87 to go with her score of plus-20 the day before.
In the individual competition, Robinson is now tied for 49th place on plus-six after two rounds, Burgess is tied for 100th on plus-16 while Rabain is 120th on plus-35 ? some 34 strokes ahead of the bottom golfer.
Hosts South Africa are leading the team tournament overall ? with the standings worked out by combining the two best scores of each team ? on 11-under, three shots up on Germany and four shots better than first-round leaders Japan.
?I?m really not that comfortable with my swing at the moment and am finding it a real struggle ? but luckily Laura and Ebonie are doing well enough to keep us in it,? said Rabain from the team hotel last night.
?Our goal is to finish in the top half of the field if possible, which means we will have to play well from here on in. From my point of view it?s a real battle. Some of the girls at this tournament hit the ball a long way and perhaps I?ve been a little intimidated.
?I?m not sure if that?s the reason why I?m not playing my best golf, but it could be a factor and from here it?s just a matter of gritting my teeth and getting on with it.?
