Island trio ready for Team Worlds

Bermuda's trio at the 23rd World Amateur Team Golf Championships in Malaysia were heading out for their final practice round today before play begins in earnest tomorrow.

Tim Carr, Nick Mansell and promising teenager Jarryd Dillas have been paired with two of the strongest countries in the championships - Wales and New Zealand - for the first two rounds of the prestigious 72-hole event which is being held on the two Saujana Golf and Country Club courses just outside Kuala Lumpur.

Tomorrow's opening round will be played on the par-71 Palm course while the Island trio, who are accompanied by non-playing manager Tracy Tavares, will then switch to the neighbouring Bunga Raya course, also par-71, on Friday.

Dillas, who is now attending the David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Florida following an outstanding summer during which he placed eighth at the World Junior Golf Championships in San Diego, will go out with Brad Shilton of New Zealand and Nigel Edwards of Wales.

Port Royal superintendent Mansell is paired with Kiwi Tim Wilkinson and Welshman David Price while Marine Police officer Carr, making his second appearance at the World Amateurs, will play with Eddie Lee of New Zealand and Lee Harpin of Wales.

Traditionally, countries have sent their strongest players to compete in the bi-ennial event, which was won two years ago by the USA.

This year's tournament has attracted 60 teams.

Other countries playing on the Palm course today are Puerto Rico, Singapore, Germany, Korea, Scotland, El Salvador Czech Republic, Mexico, Lebanon, Malaysia, France, United States, Finland, Bolivia, India, Iran, Hong Kong, Russia, Slovenia, Norway, Pakistan, Australia, Chile, Slovakia, Canada, Iceland, Costa Rica, Japan, Ireland and Croatia.

The Bunga Raya course will host teams from the Netherlands, Guatemala, Portugal, Venezuela, Paraguay, Turkey, Italy, Chinese Taipei, Panama, Thailand, Belgium, Sweden, Colombia, Spain, Latvia, Argentina, Egypt, Austria, Saudi Arabia, Ecuador, Swaziland, Denmark, South Africa, Brazil, Switzerland, Philippines, Greece, England, Zimbabwe, Estonia.
