Islanders aim to derail Rangers express

St. David?s and Southampton Rangers will square off against each other today at Lord?s for the third time in as many weeks in a match that will put the eventual victor firmly in the driver?s seat for the Premier Division Limited Overs championship.

Rangers, the league?s sole remaining unbeaten side, handed the Islanders a 133-run loss en route to winning a second Belco Cup title in three years last month at Lord?s. The two clubs then drew last weekend?s Two Day Premier Division contest at the Oval where the bat dominated the ball.

Rangers? new acquisition Lionel Cann again feasted on his former team?s bowling attack, posting scores of 77 and 61 not out in the wake of last month?s blistering, unbeaten knock of 128 in the Belco Cup final. Cann also accounted for five Islanders? wickets to fall during the two contests.

Southampton skipper Janeiro Tucker has also enjoyed all-round success against St. David?s this season, managing scores of 72, 65 and 36 while seizing four wickets.

But it was the tight bowling of Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock that really had the Islanders batsmen in a spin last weekend, only the free-scoring bat of Chris Foggo managing to resist a diluted Rangers? attack expected to return to full-strength for today?s crucial contest. Likewise, St. David?s could also be bolstered by the returns of Dean Minors and player/coach Clay Smith, who opted not to play against Rangers last weekend. Opening bowler George O?Brien, Jr. also did not see action against Rangers last week.

The player was due to appear before an internal disciplinary committee to answer charges stemming from an on-field incident that occurred during last month?s Belco Cup final. The home team will attempt to avenge that heart-breaking defeat ? their second straight loss in the final ? and finally stall Rangers? runaway championship express.

But anything less than a St. David?s win would see Rangers take another step toward a third limited overs championship since 1999.

St. David?s last clinched a limited overs championship in 2001 ? the year the Islanders swept all major domestic titles.

Last season?s limited overs champions Western Stars travel to nearby Devonshire Recreation Club to take on Social Club for the second week in succession. Stars exited the grounds with a comprehensive eight-wicket triumph to bring a three-game losing streak to an end with former team skipper Albert Steede returning from injury.

Elsewhere today, Bailey?s Bay host host Eastern Counties rivals Cleveland County at Sea Breeze Oval and St. George?s go gunning for their second limited overs win and second straight victory against Flatts at Wellington Oval.

All First Division clubs have the weekend off apart from Warwick, PHC and Somerset Bridge. Unbeaten Warwick take on the might of Stars at St. John?s Field while landlords Bridge host tenants PHC at White Hill in two Combined Knockout Cup fixtures that were postponed on May 22.
