Jones places third on US junior tour event
Promising teenage golfer Nick Jones has placed third at a top junior tournament in Florida, continuing his summer of success in the Sunshine state.
Jones, the son of local golf pro Eardley Jones, fired rounds of 71, 72 and 76 at the Reserve course on the Orange Lake resort in Orlando to claim third overall at the X-Factor Junior Tour event.
The youngster had to rush from the airport after a flight delay just to make his tee time for the opening round and responded by carding a one-under-par 71, which was the lowest round in the 16-19 age group on the first day of the 54-hole tournament.
He followed up with an even-par 72 on the second day on the 6,505 yard course which left him one shot behind leader Kenny Leech who followed his first round 73 with a fine 69.
On the final day day, Jones struggled in rain and gusting winds, returning a four-over 76 which left him in third, six shots behind Leech who scored a third-day 71 for a total of 213.
In second place was Robert Thorngate from Naples, Florida who shot 72, 73, 72 to finish on 217.
Jones is now lying ninth overall in the X-Factor tour points standings for this season, having been able to compete at several events over the summer following funds provided by the Junior Elite athlete award which he received earlier this year.
He is now residing full-time in Florida, having started at the Grandview Preparatory School in Boca Raton this week where he will face strong competition to earn a place on the school team of which Leech is already a member.
