Kenshae makes motocross history

Bermuda Motocross Club kicked off their 2001-02 season at Coney Island on Sunday with exciting action which kept the crowd entertained during 15 races in eight classes.

Kenshae Wilson made history by winning the first 50cc five to seven age points race, which also marked his first ever win. He capped the day by winning all three races in that class.

Serjuin Burgess, Luke Parker and Craig Nesbitt Jr all enjoyed turns at the front of the field but each time the chequered flag was taken by Wilson.

Burgess and Nesbitt, the two rookies, finished second and third while Parker, with two seconds heading into the final moto, was prevented from starting the last due to a jammed wheel and had to settle for fourth overall.

The 50cc 8-12 class saw three new riders out for their first taste of organised racing. Corie Wolffe also celebrated a first win and then a hat-trick while Serjunnae Burgess, one of the new female riders, rode her Cobra to second overall with a third and two seconds. Sanjay Fostin placed third.

There were only three 65cc riders but what the class lacked in numbers it made up for in excitement as Jonte Smith claimed first place overall.

Smith drove a terrific final race with Zahkie Iris as he tried to wrap up the hat-trick, but Iris denied him, taking victory to add to two earlier second placings.

Smith passed Iris in the air in the final moto but Iris later recovered as Smith then tried the same move on the same spot only to end up on the ground. He was then forced to push his bike over the finish line. Chad Sutherland survived falls to place third.

Gary Cann was the fastest rider in the 85cc B class, winning all three races as Anthony Grant tried to shadow him but fell off the pace. Antoine Bean finished third.

In the 85cc C class, Drake Simmons used his recent competition in Canada to his advantage as he clinched a hat-trick. First time rider Joshua Charlton was a surprise runner-up, ahead of Craig Smith who ran the 50cc class last season. Nicky Tucker rode only one moto.

The 125 riders were split into two classes with C running first and Gary Blackwell starting the season on a good note, winning the first moto on his new Honda.

However, he then went from first to worst in the remaining races as he finished 10th and then didn't compete in the final moto.He had to settle for sixth overall.

Mark Burrows won the second race and with two other seconds won the class. Second was Graham Sutherland.

Melanie Munro created quite a stir as she hole-shot the third moto and kept the lead for four laps until slipping back.

Munro finished fifth in that race and third overall. Kyle Tavares and Maurice Symons, just up from the 85cc class, were fourth and eighth overall respectively.

Rookie riders set the pace in the 125B class where Aaron Cannonier took two wins and was followed home by Loronzo Burch, Enwar Hunt and Ashley Simmons in moto one and Hunt and Aaron Anderson in moto two. Shaki Easton won the final moto with Anderson and Hunt following.

Otis Ingham took line honours on his 250cc but the 'Beast from the East', Cannonier, continued to close in on his rival.

The next round of racing is this Sunday, starting at 12.30.
