Khano scores again

In the final minute of Wednesday night?s 4-1 victory for New England Revolution over Real Salt Lake, Khano Smith got another chance to show why he should be a professional player in Major League Soccer.

On the field for 14 minutes as a replacement for Jose Cancela, the Bermudian international took possession of a mis-hit clearance from the expansion team?s goalkeeper and had only one thought on his mind.

The gangly striker beat his defender and from the left-hand corner of the penalty box, rifled a shot into the top corner past the despairing hands of DJ Countess.

?It was a mixture of relief and excitement,? said the former Dandy Town striker, who has suffered somewhat of a goal drought since scoring on his full debut against Kansas City Wizards in early June.

?It?s always a great feeling to score and I?m happy that it was a pretty good goal.

?I?ve been wanting to score because it?s been a while since my last one and it was good to get one like that.?

After signing for the New England side after impressing during their pre-season tour of the Island earlier this year, Smith is making regular appearances off the bench for the Eastern Conference leaders after a short spell as a starter.

?It is all going pretty well for a first season,? continued Smith, who has had visits in Boston from Carlos Smith, Rohaan Simons, Stephen Astwood as well as friends and family since joining Steve Nicol?s men.

?I wouldn?t say all my dreams are coming true, but it is not that far off. If we can win the MLS Cup this year then I would be getting pretty close though.

?There?s still a lot of work to do over here, my ambition is to become a stand-out player in this league and I still have a way to go before that will happen.

?I have a good working relationship with the manager, Steve?s a good coach and is quick to point out things you do wrong but he has no ego about him and he is easy to work with.?

Following Smith?s last-minute strike, Nicol was quick to jokingly berate the Bermudian forward for ?not taking the ball to the corner? in reference to a public comment he made to fellow striker Taylor Twellman who gave up possession late in a game when the Revs were just 2-1 ahead by shooting instead of heading for the corner flag.

Nicol, who was delighted to see his side return to winning ways after a cup defeat midweek, was pleased with the performance of the rookie forward.

?He looked lively,? said Nicol, recently selected to coach an MLS select side against Real Madrid in Spain on August 23.

?He?s got a great shot, which you saw out there and I?d like to see more of that.?

Smith, who wears the number 32 shirt for the Revs, may get an elevation into the starting line-up in the near future with Steve Ralston and Twellman being selected for the US national side, although competition for places is stiff at the Gillette Stadium.

The Revolution now go on the road for the next two games, taking on FC Dallas at Pizza Hut Park tomorrow and then heading off to Colorado to take on the Rapids on Wednesday.
