Kilmarlic stay ahead
North Carolina team Kilmarlic GC continued their assault on the 52nd annual Goodwill Golf Championships yesterday, finishing the third of five rounds with a four-shot lead in the net division and three-shot lead in the gross.
Led by pro Bryan Sullivan, Kilmaric fired a highly respectable net 60 at Mid Ocean Club to end the day on 38-under-par and stay four shots clear of the 'A' team from Country Club of Orange Park, who climbed into second with a 57 at Belmont Hills.
The tournament is being decided over 90 holes for the first time with all of the teams playing five courses ? Riddell's Bay, Mid Ocean Club, Port Royal, Tucker's Point and Belmont Hills.
Country Club of Vermont and Montgomery CC, the defending net champions, remained very much in the hunt ? both five shots back at 33 under par.
Of the Bermuda teams, Tucker's Point Club lead the way in eighth position.
In the gross division, Country Club of Orange Park closed the gap on Kilmarlic to three.
Led by Champions Tour player Bob Duval, they fired a nine-under-par 61 at Belmont Hills, leaving them on 25-under after 54 holes.
The local team of Mid Ocean Club, with pro Chris Marshall at the helm, fell back to fourth but remain in a strong position to pick up some of this week's silverware and will be confident of a low score when they travel to Riddell's Bay tomorrow for the fourth round, following today's rest day.
Bethesda CC remain in third place after recording a gross 62 at Riddell's yesterday to leave them on a total of 24-under-par.
Among the seniors, overnight gross leaders Bedrock GC A, captained by Joe Carr, were overtaken by Westchester Hills, with pro Kevin Morris leading the way. Westchester turned in a fine four-under-par 66 at Belmont Hills. They stand on nine-under after 54 holes.
Lambton G&CC are tied for second with Bedrock.
In the seniors net division, Plantation at Ponte Vedra out of Florida surged into a tie for first place with overnight leaders Greenwich CC 'A' after recording a respectable 62 at Belmont Hills.
Plantation are captained by professional Ron Nicol with amateurs Gus Klein, Jim Foley and Frank MacLaughlin completing the team.
Away from the team event, all of the pros are competing for cash prizes in a stableford competition which Kilmaric's Sullivan continues to dominate.
Sullivan was one-under-par on his own ball at Mid Ocean Club and leads by three points with a total of 66.
Paul Oglesby, Mike Sherman and Rich Parker are his closest rivals.
In the senior stableford, Duval stretched his lead by one point to take his total to 58. Long-time visitor Ed Whalley is in second place on 53.
Play resumes tomorrow.
