Kyle cracker sets Town on their way

Action man: Kyle Lightbourne enjoyed a winning weekend as Macclesfield Town beat Swansea 1-0 at the Vetch Field on Saturday.

Kyle Lightbourne scored a cracker to set Macclesfield Town on their way to a crucial victory last night.

The Third Division club beat Shrewsbury Town 2-1 and the Bermudian scored from all of 40 yards.

Spotting the Shrewsbury 'keeper off his line, the striker let fly and the ball sailed into the back of the net after 25 minutes.

Just after the half hour mark, Lightbourne had a chance to double his tally. Ricky Lambert fired in a teasing cross but despite his size he was just unable to connect with a header.

Chris Priest put the Silkmen 2-0 up but they were left to sweat when Luke Rodgers reduced the deficit just before the break.

In the second half, Lightbourne had an opportunity to give the home side some breathing space but the same 'keeper he had embarrassed in the first period recovered some of his pride by saving brilliantly from his powerful snapshot.

The win means Macclesfield are now in 16th place on 33 points.

Meanwhile, fellow Bermudian Shaun Goater has revealed how he has been calling strike-partner Paulo Wanchope names following his recent goalscoring exploits for Manchester City.

Wanchope made it a dozen for a truncated season, and 22 in 44 career starts for the Blues, when he grabbed the equalising goal in City's 2-1 win at Watford on Sunday.

The first-half effort prompted an unusual tribute from Goater.

''I am calling him Ruud after van Nistelrooy (of Manchester United) not because he has been insulting me at the moment,'' Goater told the Manchester Evening News.

''He just cannot stop scoring. The ball seems to be following him around and he is making the most of it. He has been deadly.

''I am delighted for him. People ask me about the fact that my goal flow seems to have slowed down but that doesn't matter as long as the team is winning. At the end of the day, getting three points each match and getting back to where we feel we belong, in the Premiership, is all that matters.

''We play with two strikers and if one scores every game then that is all you can ask for. If they are both on target even better."
