Kyme earns clash with second seed
Squash medal hope Nick Kyme was scheduled to play his CAC Games quarter-final late last night against second seed Jose Becerril of Mexico.
Kyme, the Island?s number one, beat Shawn Simpson of Barbados 6-9, 9-2, 9-4, 9-3 in his opening game on Sunday night, the only Bermudian to advance from the opening round.
The Island?s only pro, who carried the flag at the opening ceremony, is also scheduled to compete in the doubles with former pro James Stout, and team event with Michael Shrubb and Mel Caines.
An all-glass court, similar to the one used here for the Bermuda Masters earlier in the year, has been erected in downtown Cartagena for the Games and that is where Kyme went into battle at around 11 p.m. last night.
The squash players were the only Island competitors in action yesterday. Olympian Katura Horton-Perinchief will compete tomorrow in the three-metre springboard, having placed eighth in the one-metre diving event over the weekend.
Kyme could play his semi-final today and the doubles event, in which Bermuda have been drawn against the top seeded hosts, is also scheduled to begin.
?It?s pretty hot down here in Cartagena but there is a great atmosphere,? said chef de mission Kris Hedges, himself a former international cyclist.
?You really feel you are part of a Games and there are flags flying all over the place.?
Geri Mewett is scheduled to cycle this Saturday while athletes Michael Donawa and Akila King, who are yet to arrive in Colombia, will compete late next week.
Meanwhile in Trinidad, Bermuda couldn?t improve on their medal count of five in the CAC Junior Athletic Championships with Aaron Evans finishing just outside the top three in the Under-17 800 metres and triple jump gold medallist Arantxa King finishing a disappointing last in the long jump, with just one valid leap.
Bermuda Track and Field Association were meeting last night to try and work out how it was King, originally scheduled along with four others to compete in Colombia, switched to the junior event without BTFA president Clarence Smith realising.
Just two senior athletes travelled to the CACs in Colombia and the meeting will help ?sort all this stuff out? said Smith on Sunday following the communication breakdown.
It is understood the decision to switch King, the world youth champion, to Trinidad was actually made three weeks ago.
