Kyme facing stiff challenge

After returning from the heights of Tibet, Nick Kyme will be looking to maintain his standing at the summit of local squash.

Kyme, the Island's number one player, has just returned from a three-month study of the area and will no doubt be feeling a little rusty when he takes on Nick Wiffen in the opening event of tonight's Docksiders World Class Exhibition.

However, he will not want the relative newcomer to Bermuda to get one over him and so the contest at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association on Middle Road should be a spirited affair.

Kyme has performed in various local and overseas events and is based at Trinity College in the USA. Earlier this year he reached the semi-finals of the US Intercollegiate Championship and was a member of Trinity's three-time NCAA Championship team. He is also the current holder of the Fast Forward Freight Club Championships trophy which earned him number one status on the Island.

Wiffen, who teaches at Saltus, was raised in England and has been a Wiltshire county player and was that area's championship runner-up in 1999. He has also been a Meer squash team player in the Amsterdam leagues.

Since playing in Bermuda he has won a trophy in the Shell Handicap tournament held in October.

The main event tonight pits former world number two Brett Martin against Bermuda's resident professional Gary Plumstead.

Martin, who has won three Bermuda Opens, retired from the professional tour in 1998 and held Plumstead's post with the squash association until 1999.

Plumstead was ranked as high as seventh in his native South Africa. He reached the semi-finals of the South African Closed tournament. He moved to Germany and won 15 of the more than 40 competitions he entered.

Kyme and Wiffen take to the court at 7.00 p.m. tonight with the main event at 8.00 p.m..
