Lady Zebras celebrate first league crown

Like their male counterparts, PHC Zebras women?s football team also basked in the glory of a league championship last weekend.

And they did it in convincing fashion, shutting out BISYS Royals 3-0 at the Den to clinch a first-ever league championship and second major domestic title this season.

Going against the grain, Zebras defeated multiple cup winners Rude Girls in the Konica Cup last November at the National Sports Centre ? the first time a team other than Rude Girls had won the cup.

So far PHC remain undefeated this season in league play and have encountered little difficulty finding the back of the net, scoring a staggering 44 goals while conceding six

They?re already through to next month?s FA Cup final, having ousted Royals 2-1 last Wednesday night at BAA Field. Prolific scorer Tschana Wade ? daughter of the late Zebras defender Osie Jones ? netted both PHC goals.

Zebras close out the league season this Sunday against Dandy Stars.

?It feels extremely pleasing and I am very, very proud with the team,? said coach Wendell Furbert.

?At the beginning of the season they made a commitment to achieve higher standards. We didn?t exactly set out to win any particular championships, but we wanted to raise our level of performance knowing that better performances would bring us championships.?

Furbert attributed the club?s recent success to team work.

?A lot of the team?s success has been down to a team orientated focus no matter who might be scoring the goals or who might be consistently having outstanding games. It has really been a complete team effort,? he added.

Meanwhile, Bermuda Football Association will be holding the third annual Girls Easter Football Camp for girls between the ages of five and 15 at BAA Field from April 5-8.

All participants will be shown the basics of football in addition to taking part in various other fun activities.

Registration forms can be obtained from the BFA offices on Cedar Avenue, from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. Fees for the annual event are $95 per child.

Somerset Trojans thrashed Devonshire Cougars 5-2 at Somerset Cricket Club in an AS&K Under-17 KO Cup match on Sunday.

Two goals from Kenny Thompson coupled by additional strikes from Dwia Blyden, Cofield Robinson and Reginald Baker saw the home team prevail. Cougars replied through Miguel Lopes and Randy Robinson.

At Bernard Park, North Village handed cross-town rivals Boulevard a 3-1 defeat. Shayne Hollis netted twice and Ajoni Gibbons grabbed Reds other goal while Tamauri Tucker scored Blazers? consolation.

Youth Cup action continues this weekend with Cougars taking on Devonshire Colts in a Group B clash slated for Devonshire Recreation Club while Boulevard host St.George?s in a Group A contest at BAA Field. Both matches are scheduled to kick off at 12.30 p.m.
