Lambert honoured with awards after impressive Comet season
Gladwin Lambert and crew Greg Proctor were the biggest winners at Comet Class Yacht Racing Association?s annual awards ceremony hosted by the East End Mini Yacht Club in St.George?s last Saturday night.
The West End Sail Boat sailors walked away with the overall fleet championship after narrowly edging East End?s Stevie Dickinson and M?Kai Hodsoll on points.
?I?m extremely pleased to be the champion of the season. I always go out to try and win as much as I can,? Lambert told .
?I?m now looking forward to having an even better season this summer, and hopefully everyone will come out to race this year.?
Lambert also praised Proctor, his crew of 20 years.
?We have been a team over two decades now and that has been a big help in getting us to where we are today,? the veteran skipper added.
?We?ve been sailing very well over the past four years and have been fleet champions twice because we have sailed as a team and have also been friends for many, many years.?
Lambert edged Dickinson in the standings by just three points.
Dickinson acknowledged his West End rival?s achievements.
?Gladwin puts a lot of effort into it and I thought he actually sailed quite well last year and seems to be improving each year. He seems to be finally getting things together,? said Dickinson
As for his own achievements last summer, Dickinson added: ?I thought I sailed fairly consistent in the races that I did compete in. I was always in contention.?
Last summer saw Dickinson retain his Flag Pole to Flag Pole title and thwart perennial rival Rudy Bailey?s bid for a second hat-trick of Edward Cross Cup titles en route to claiming an unprecedented 14th Long Distance crown.
?It?s great to see guys like Gladwin continuing to come out and race every year. I think this does a lot for the class and hopefully this season will be even better,? Dickinson said.
?And it was also good to see Mr. Bailey (Rudy) attend the awards ceremony.?
Bailey was awarded multiple prizes for winning club regattas, while junior sailors Tre Johnville ? son of Mid Atlantic Sail Boat and Sports Club stalwart George Hayward ? Naniko Hendrickson and Venicia Raynor each received recognition for their efforts.
Guest speaker for the night?s event was Bermuda Sloop Foundation chairman, Malcolm Kirkland, who gave a brief lecture about the foundation?s training sloop, ?
