Largest ever team march in front of 80,000
Bermuda played their part in a sparkling ceremony inside and outside of the MCG to mark the opening of the 18th Commonwealth Games last night.Making a 13th appearance in the so-called Friendly Games, the Island team, dressed in traditional light blue blazers and dark blue shorts, entered behind flag-bearing teenager Arantxa King with a contingent of athletes and officials numbering almost 40 ? believed to be the largest of any ever to have represented Bermuda at a major Games. With countries marching into the stadium ? the hallowed home of Australian cricket ? not in alphabetical order but by geographical region, Bermuda found itself wedged between Belize and Canada, all three under the banner of the Americas. In a novel twist, the ceremony unfolded both inside the stadium and out, a flotilla of boats entertaining thousands who lined the banks of the River Yarra while at the same time transporting the Commonwealth baton on the final leg of its round-the-world journey into the MCG.The formalities over, action began in earnest this morning, squash player Nick Kyme the first of Bermuda?s 26-strong squad to compete ? less than 11 hours after having joined his team-mates for the three-hour ceremony.
