Late Astwood strike lifts Trojans

Stephen Astwood?s 83rd-minute goal was enough to earn Trojans their first league win of the season at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday night ? and a second straight league win over long-time nemesis Town.

Astwood?s clever toe poke that beat Jason Smith at the near post was the only thing that separated the two clubs in an otherwise scrappy match, barely worth the $10 admission fee.

Still, most Somerset fans will likely have left the ground happy after the men in black and red did just enough to get by their opponents in a match in which neither side were able to stamp their authority.

Town, who have now failed to hit the back of the net in 180 minutes of play, again paid the price for not milking their chances.

The opening half saw Trojans dominate early and Town weather the pressure and hit back just prior to the interval when they had a goal disallowed.

During one of his trademark runs down the flank, Hornets? elder statesman Carlos Smith broke free and crossed into the middle for Ottis Steede to fire home. However, referee Anthony Mouchette cancelled the strike after linesman Andre (Doc) Manders judged that the ball had crossed the touchline before reaching a well-positioned Steede in the middle.

Town?s other chance arrived when striker Antwan Russell saw a long range effort tipped over the bar by national team goalie Timmy Figureido as Hornets dominated the remainder of the half.

Trojans? best chances of the first half fell to the omnipresent Astwood who had a shot blocked from point blank range while Adolphus Lambert watched as his sweetly struck volley found the side-netting.

The second half was virtually a reversal of the first with Hornets pinning their hosts in their own half for long spells and Trojans rallying late.

Town created far more chances but it was Trojans who would hit back in the dying stages.

Second-half sub Rohaan Simons had a glancing header at the near post saved before the match was thrown into total confusion in the 80th minute. Simons converted a rebound from Astwood who appeared to have been brought down from behind in the box, leaving referee Mouchette to either award a penalty or the goal to stand.

He did neither ? much to the disapproval of Trojans coach Dennis Brown.

But there would be no denying Trojans three minutes later as Astwood got behind the Hornets? defence and beat ?keeper Smith to his left.: T.Figureido, R.Scott, S.Riley, M.Wade, D.Minors, S.Simmons, J.Butterfield (D.Swan, 80 mins), J.Scott (capt), S.Astwood, C.Robinson (R.Simons, 60 mins), A.Lambert.: J.Smith, J.Peniston, S.Waldron, D.Zuill (capt), M.Lowe, O.Steede, M.Parsons (C.Anderson, 65 mins), T.Russell, C.Smith, A.Russell (S.Smith, 45 mins), M.Smith (L.Dill, 45 mins).: J.Scott, C.Robinson (Somerset); M.Lowe (Town).: S.Astwood (Somerset); D.Zuill (Town).: Anthony Mouchette.
