North Village can become the first club since Vasco Da Gama to clinch back-to-back Premier Division titles when they close out the 2002/03 season against Dandy Town at Bernard Park tomorrow.

Vasco, no longer in the league, were the last club to capture successive league championships in 1996/97 and 1998/99.

But if all goes according to plan, Village should join an exclusive club, which currently consists of the aforementioned Vasco, PHC and Devonshire Colts.

Village are bidding for only their second league championship in 24 years and fifth overall after finally breaking their title jinx last season. The Bernard Park club need only a single point tomorrow to sew things up.

Somerset Trojans were the last team to win three consecutive championships in 1982, 82/83 and 84, while they and Social Club are the only two clubs ever to achieve the feat.

Village coach Scott Morton is aware that destiny rests solely in his team's own hands.

"The only thing that can defeat us is ourselves - that's how the players are looking at it," he said.

"That's not being arrogant, but they just feel that with the quality of players that we have there's no reason why we shouldn't come away with the desired result."

Morton expects another tough challenge from his former team but insists that there is no added pressure on his shoulders because of the link.

Village scored a comprehensive 3-1 win over their cross-town rivals during a midweek FA Cup quarter-final replay. Tomorrow's contest will be the third meeting between the pair in seven days.

"It's almost certain that Town will be looking for points to finish the season strongly," Morton said. "I know the mentality of their players and coach (Devarr Boyles) and so there's no way that they are going to come out here, lay down and play dead."

Town - already assured Premier Division status next season - have little else to play for other than pride. They will have to do without suspended forward Gregg Foggo, full-back Randy Swan and midfielder Reggie Tucker, while the availability of striker Janeiro Tucker also remains questionable.

The only team between Village and another league title are Devonshire Cougars who are three points adrift.

If Albert Smith's side are to seize a first-ever league championship then they must win against visiting Trojans tomorrow, make up a five goal differential and hope Village lose.

Cougars are well capable of bagging the goals, having tallied 15 in their last four outings and boast the best record in the league with 33 to their credit.

However, they will find their western counterparts in no-nonsense mode as Trojans they are one of four teams battling to avoid relegation.

Hopes of preserving their Premier Division status rests upon a victory over Cougars and losses for both Devonshire Colts and Somerset Eagles.

Last weekend Mark Trott's squad clearly indicated that they do not intend going down without a fight by handing neighbours Somerset Eagles a 4-1 FA Cup quarter-final spanking.

While it is anticipated that the focus will be on Bernard Park and Devonshire Rec. tomorrow, there is plenty stake at White Hill Field and neighbouring Somerset Cricket Club.

At White Hill, sixth-placed Eagles will have to come away with maximum points against Boulevard in order to prolong their Premier Division status.

Eagles currently have 15 points and a win over the visitors, coupled with losses by both Devonshire Colts (16 points) and Trojans (14 points), will see them steer clear of the danger zone. Like Town, Blazers have only pride to play.

Colts and bottom team PHC, meanwhile, clash at Somerset Cricket Club in a match that the former need only a single point from to confirm their survival, while Zebras must win and hope that both Eagles and Trojans come up short.

Elsewhere, in First Division action, leaders Hamilton Parish have had their match against Prospect postponed, while the match between St.George's and Wolves has now been switched to St.David's.

Ireland Rangers can move within two points of idle second place team Southampton Rangers when they take on lowly Paget at White Hill Field. Social Club and St.David's clash at Bernard Park.
