Leg Byes romp to victory in the rain
Fine Leg Byes played through the rain to complete a seven-wicket victory over Jamaican Association but North Village are the new Commercial Cricket League leaders ? despite not a ball being bowled in their abandoned match against title rivals Hamilton Parish.
Nine-man JA reached a promising 88 for two from 20 overs against 10-man FLB in a match reduced to 35 overs a side at the Royal Naval Field, thanks to Lloyd Morrison?s 37 and skipper Junior Lindo?s 30, but then tumbled to 124 all out in the 27th over.
Ajit Tiwary and Nick Cardinez were the wreckers-in-chief, claiming three for nine from five overs and three for 39 from 6.4 overs respectively, before FLB romped to 125 for two in 21 overs to avenge a three-wicket defeat earlier in the season.
Opener John Woolnough led the way, unfurling five sixes and three fours in his unbeaten 65, while Simon Lambert chipped in with 23 as FLB completed the only victory in Bermuda on Sunday when all BCB matches were ruined by the rain.
JA manager Glenmore Barrett was philosophical after the match, saying: ?It was raining for most of the match but the guys wanted to play. We?ve fallen down in the league this season and haven?t got up properly yet.?
JA have the chance to return to winning ways when they meet Western Stars at St. John?s Field this weekend. Stars are yet to take a point this season.
West Indian Association were prepared to play at any cost at Shelly Bay on Sunday after being out of action for a month but were forced to settle for the points when bottom club Stars turned up with only five players and defaulted their third match of the season.
?The pitch was wet at 1.30 and needed to dry out but I didn?t have a leg to stand on as I had only five players at that time,? said Stars skipper Chris Smith. ?I don?t know if any more of my players turned up after I left but WIA seemed in a rush to claim the points.?
Opening batsman Barry Richards said WIA had nine players present at 1.30 and they stayed on to have some practice. WIA?s last match was on June 18 when their game against JA ended in a draw because of bad light. They?ve since had a default victory over FLB, a bye and a week off for the football World Cup final.
The rain frustrated Village and Parish whose game at Police Field ? once used regularly by the Commercial League ? was called off because of a flooded pitch after the groundsman failed to put the covers on following the Central Countries Cup match the previous day.
Village?s only defeat this season came at the hands of Parish in early June and the defending champions were keen to seek revenge against their rivals whose two defeats have both come against Forties ? the team with the bye on Sunday.
Parish and Village picked up five points apiece ? enough to push Village into a clear five-point lead for the first time this season.
Forties, with a match in hand, can reclaim top spot by completing the double over WIA this weekend.
Forties won the first meeting by six wickets at the Royal Naval Field but WIA?s squad have been strengthened through the return of fast bowler Anthony Brathwaite and batsman Dave Greenidge.
Parish can join Village on 65 points, but from a match more, by beating FLB for the second time at Shelly Bay, having won the first meeting there by 55 runs.
