Leg Trappers exceed their expectations
The current cricket season will be viewed as one of great achievement for IFP Leg Trappers even if they come out on the losing end of Sunday's First Division Knockout final against Devonshire Rec.
Not that the top flight newcomers are about to concede anything to Devonshire, but team spokesman and player James Broadbent said whatever the outcome this year has exceeded all expectations.
"Our aim pretty much at the start of the season was to finish in the top half of the First Division table and hopefully to at least reach the semi-final of a top competition like the Knockout," he said. "We have done better than that. We are fourth in the league behind Bailey's Bay, Devonshire Rec. and Flatts and last Sunday's victory over Flatts in the Knockout semi-final has us in this weekend's final. It's definitely been a great season for us."
A powerhouse in the Commercial League for seven seasons, Leg Trappers completed last season undefeated and consequently decided to test their ability in the First Division.
"We really wanted to test ourselves after having seven good years in the Commercial League. We felt the time was right to go up a level, to see what we can do and I think we have proved that we are capable of putting up a good show in the First Division," said Broadbent.
What really makes the accomplishments of the team this season so outstanding is the fact that they have performed at a high level despite regularly being forced to play without key players.
Broadbent pointed out that the team consists mainly of expatriates who often have to travel for business.
"We have had to use a lot of players with so many people often travelling, so our real strength has been our depth. We have always been able to put out reasonably good sides even with key people missing," he said.
"That's one of the big reasons why we won against Flatts in last Sunday's semi-final. The depth has really seen us through."
Looking at the team overall, key performers for them in the First Division have been skipper Graham Strange, their most consistent performer throughout the past seven years, productive with the bat while also snatching a few wickets here and there. Chris Fleming has also provided lots of runs, while veteran spin bowler James Swan has been their main bowling threat all season.
A solid addition to the team as they moved up to the First Division has been Australian Luke O'Connor who has made quite an impact with his all-round ability.
Trappers are on a high going into Sunday's final against Devonshire Rec. and they anticipate putting out a strong side.
"We are confident," said Broadbent. "This is the first time we have a full squad from which to field a team. They have beaten us twice this season, winning convincingly in our first meeting but we gave them a real test two weeks ago.
"We scored 245 runs but they crossed the score with seven wickets down.
"However, we were very competitive and we expect to be very competitive once again this time around."
