Leona aiming to be a knockout in the ring

If Leona Brown's sizzle in the boxing ring matches the sparkle of the outfit the she modelled during yesterday's weigh-in the public are in for a treat indeed.

The American, whose fashion statement was well received by those gathered for the mid-day event at Fairmont Hamilton Princess, tipped the scales at 117 pounds, just under the 118 pound limit for her bout against namesake Lisa Brown for the WIBF Women's Bantamweight world title at CedarBridge Academy tonight (8 p.m.).

Leona, hailing from Buffalo, New York, is seeking to regain the championship for the third time, as well as avenge an April defeat at the hands of her rival.

For her part, the champion likewise appeared fit and trim, coming in at 116 pounds, and will be seeking to make full use of her height and reach advantage over the more compact Leona.

Bermuda's resident Jamaican community will have two fighters to cheer on, with the co-main feature pitting Jamaica's Delroy Henderson against Curtis Murray of Guyana in the middleweight division.

Henderson, who on Thursday noted how he had not made the journey northward to lose, was a trim 173, compared to 174 for the Guyanese pugilist.

Another intriguing contest will see (Slick) Willie Stewart, an unbeaten, fast-rising prospect in the super middleweight class, squaring off against another Jamaican, Anthony Osbourne, who came in as a late replacement for Charles Izzard.

Stewart, like Lisa Brown, has a distinct weight and height advantage over his opponent, weighing 171 compared to 163 for Osbourne.

The final professional fight will feature yet more contrast, with the towering Joe Kaak of Canada taking on Ukrainian Oleksiy Trofimov. The latter was found to be close to 20 pounds lighter than his opponent at the weigh-in - Kaak posted 194 pounds, to the Ukranian's 178 - which precipitated hasty negotiations between the two camps regarding financial compensation for the lighter fighter in lieu of Kaak having to shed a few pounds.

Meanwhile, the amateur protagonists are set to hit the scales today, with three Bermudians slated to grace the squared circle.

Arguably Bermuda's brightest prospect, Jerome Caines, is set for a supreme test against Jeremy Thompson of Canada. Freeman Smith engages Jason Douglas in another amateur affair, while a local to be named is due to tackle yet another Canadian in the form of Kyle Ferguson.
