Let's enjoy our football, says new BFA supremo

Exciting times lay ahead for players and followers of soccer, with Bermuda Football Association president Larry Mussenden intent on injecting a new spirit of enjoyment.

To this end the new president has instituted a new marketing and special events committee to find creative methods of attracting new fans, while encouraging older ones that may have become disenchanted to return.

Charged with this task is Craig Tyrrell, who will head up the committee and has experience in the entertainment sphere.

While added features surrounding the game may not initially approach the glittering sideshows that accompany NFL, MLB and NBA games in the United States, Mussenden said that they will certainly enhance the game experience.

"There are a lot of exciting things that can be done around football that make the game better, so that it can be taken to the Island and to the world," said Mussenden. "There are a number of off-field activities that we can do to support and supplement the game that goes on on the field.

"One of the ideas that I have is to perhaps hold a one bounce competition, which every school boy has played, and maybe we can establish a one bounce champion of Bermuda.

"Another competition we could have each week throughout the season is to see who can keep the ball up the most times.

"The other idea that we can explore is to get the police radar gun to see who has the hardest shot, and everybody thinks that they're the best at what they do, so lets have a skills competition as well."

And Bermuda could also find itself among the Guinness Book of Records, with Mussenden also possessing thoughts of making a bid to host the longest ever soccer match, one which would invite players and fans alike to participate.

"We can have East versus West, and everybody in Bermuda can have a chance to be a part of it," he suggested. "You see other countries that come together to make the largest pizza, or Philly cheese steak, so we can have the longest football game, which might prove beneficial in bringing people together."
