Letters to the Sport Editor
Dear Sir,
Please allow me some space in your newspaper to express how pleased I was by the performances of a number of our international cricketers over the weekend.
The bowling of fast bowler Kevin Hurdle in particular impressed me. He bowled a good line and length and on the odd occasion sent down a ‘yorker' that Joel Garner himself would have been proud of.
Another national player I observed closely was all-rounder Lionel (Tit) Cann. He batted extremely well, upon arrival at the crease he took his time, played himself in, and once set took the St. George's bowling attack apart.
I was particularly pleased with his willingness to run hard between the wickets and pick up the singles.
Cann took three wickets and although he was economical, giving up 24 runs in his 10 overs, I am convinced he can bowl tighter. It's obvious that the coaching of new national coach Gus Logie has already made an impact.
Interestingly Southampton skipper Janeiro Tucker looked well on his way to building a big score until he was bowled around his legs by what can only be described as a brilliant ball from St. George's competitive captain Greg Foggo.
It is a shame that Greg withdrew from Bermuda's training squad because I have no doubt that he would be a major asset to the team in Ireland.
I cannot close without mentioning young Malachi Jones, who was 13 not out at the end. He looks a very promising batsman, a classy leg glide for four off the bowling of veteran Herbie Bascome typified his innings.
It was also good to hear that others in contention for the national squad performed well. I look forward to finding out who the final 14 will be.
