Lightbourne's cracker sets Silkmen on road to glory

Kyle Lightbourne enjoyed a memorable match - scoring a spectacular lobbed goal and being influential throughout - as Macclesfield routed Barnsley 4-1 in the Worthington Cup's first round last night in England.

In a riveting battle that needed an extra-time hat-trick by the Bermudian's team-mate Danny Whitaker to determine the outcome, Lightbourne was a key element in the Silkmen's success at the Moss Rose.

In the 29th minute, the striker (pictured right) opened the scoring with a goal that fans are already tipping for Macclesfield's goal of the season. Taking the ball on his chest about 25 yards out, Lightbourne spotted Barnsley keeper Andy Marriott way off his line and volleyed over the latter's head to rattle the back of the net.

Prior to scoring, he had headed barely wide and then had Marriott rushing to gather a ball at his feet. He had a handful of near misses after scoring also, including another header which he felt crossed the line when it slammed into the crossbar and bounced down.

Barnsley kept pressing and found an equaliser six minutes from time but were foiled from climbing back into the match as Whitaker stole the show in the second half of extra-time.

His first goal originated from Lightbourne winning the ball in midfield. The second of Whitaker's strikes also came compliments of the Bermudian who fired a long-range pass which his team-mate ran onto and drilled home from inside the area.

That was 3-1 and, for good measure, Whitaker added his third in the dying seconds of the match.
