Marshall snatches second medal

Brittney Marshall: Double medals at the Carifta Games

Bermuda's young athletes were heading towards another creditable overall performance at the CARIFTA Games in the Bahamas after day two on Sunday when Brittney Marshall and Latroya Darrell took the Island's medal haul to four.

For Marshall it was medal number two as she added a silver to her shot put gold by taking honours in the Under-17 girls' discus with a throw of 35.87 metres. On Saturday she retained her title in the shot putt with a heave of 12.45 metres.

Darrell, who only recently celebrated her 14th birthday and who is competing in her first CARIFTA Games, collected a silver in the high jump with a leap of five feet, five and a half inches.

In addition to those medals, Bermuda also have a gold from Zindzi Swan who brushed aside all opposition in the Under-20 age group with a leap of 6.01 metres in the long jump on the opening day.

Several Bermuda athletes were scheduled to participate in yesterday's final day of competition but at press time last night information on their results was unavailable.

The success of the Bermuda team after the first two days was being shared by Sports Minister Randy Horton, who Bermuda Track and Field Association officials pointed out, was the first Bermuda minister to attend a CARIFTA Games.

The minister met with all members of the Bermuda contingent on Sunday night and congratulated them on their performances.

Darrell's silver medal will have been pleasing for national coach Gerry Swan as she is the youngest member of the squad and competing in her first Games.

Her best pre-CARIFTA mark was five feet, two and a half inches.

Marshall, stepping into her second event, saw the lead change at least five times in the discus. The sixth and final round of the competition began with the Bermudian in the lead with her throw of 35.87.

But Keisha Walkes of Barbados, who also competed in the under-17 girls shot putt, managed a gold-winning effort of 37.8 metres with her final throw.

Crystal Hayward was competitive in her first CARIFTA final, finishing eighth. Her throw of 32.56 metres in the under-17s came close to her best.

Danielle Watson placed fourth in her 200 metres under-17 girls semi-final, failing to qualify for yesterday's final.
