Mastalir first in Trunk swim
Teenager Jason Mastalir powered home in difficult conditions to win yesterday?s annual Trunk Island Swim in Harrington Sound.
The 14-year-old battled a strong north westerly wind and one-foot waves over the 1,325 metre course to lead a reduced field of 60 swimmers in 17 minutes and nine seconds.
Second place in the twice-postponed event, which has been held for the past 25 years, went to Michael Cash in 17.32.
The race, which began at Trunk Island and finished in Palmetto Bay, saw Cash start out strongly and open a lead of some 10 metres over a following pack of four which included Mastalir.
As the race continued, Mastalir caught Cash and it was a cat and mouse affair over the middle portion of the course before the Sharks Swim Club youngster forged ahead to win comfortably.
Behind Cash in third place was another veteran open water swimmer, Kevin Insley, who clocked 17.57.
Two seconds behind in fourth place and the first overall female was 14-year-old Eleanor Gardner of the host Harbour Club while in fifth place was another youngster, 15-year-old Nathan Frick of Dolphins Swim Club in a time of 18.10.
Rounding out the top ten were Masters swimmer Nick Strong in 18.50, Kaitlyn Miller in 18.51, Nicole Yearwood in 19.17, Rebecca Sharpe in 19.22 and Ashley Berry 19.39.
Of the top ten, six were either 13 or 14-year-olds and five of them girls.
The 12 and under age group winner was 11-year-old Morgan Hopkins of Sharks who finished in 23.41.
