McKenzie crushes senior rivals

Top US senior Clark McKenzie fired a superb one-under-par 69 in the final round at Riddell's Bay yesterday to capture his fifth Bermuda Senior Championship by a staggering ten stroke margin.

The Baltimore, Maryland resident has now won five championships in just seven attempts after carding an impressive five birdies yesterday for a tournament total 218.

He beat out leading locals Michael Tavares, who finished second on 228, and Eldon Raynor (231).

Bermudian Brenda McClean won the senior women's title with a two round total of 176 after shooting rounds of 86 and 90 on the par 70 lay-out, while Kathy Hines (183) placed second and Sandy Dyer (185) third.

Among the men, McKenzie, 61, was simply unstoppable. And he makes no secret of the fact that that the sport runs deeply in his genes with his father (Roland) having enjoyed the distinction of playing alongside US golf legend Bobby Jones in the Walker Cup during the 1920s, while his grandfather founded Oakland Golf and Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

"If I didn't play golf then I would have been in trouble," joked McKenzie about his golfing inheritance.

"I love golf and coming down here. It is a wonderful place.

"Obviously yesterday (Wednesday) with all that rain it was really wet, but today was a beautiful day and I think that everyone played good golf.

"The conditions were just absolutely fantastic and I shot a 69 for one under par today.

"I ended up sinking five birdies and I birdied all of the par threes. So all in all it has been a great tournament."

McKenzie is a current member of the US international senior squad that is preparing for this summer's series against the neighbouring Canadians and has also made it to the quarter-finals of the US Senior Amateurs on two occasions.

Meanwhile, in the net division, Roger Harvey secured first place on 200, while Max Abend (202) and Joe Perry (210) rounded out the top three men.

Barbara Bogg (152) topped the women's net division on retrogression over Shirley Brown (152), while Ruby Douglas placed third with 154.
