Mile champion Woodley wins again
Some 90 young runners braved the bad weather to compete in the latest races of the KPMG Junior Road Running Series on Sunday.
In the boys? 11 to 12 three kilometre race, Winton Woodley jr, winner of his Front Street Mile race a week earlier, crossed the line first at a windswept Botanical Gardens to claim victory, followed by relative newcomer to the road running scene, Rory Wilson of Warwick Academy.
Third place went to Saltus? Jack Keyes.
In the girls? event, Jazmine Outerbridge continued her long, unbeaten record in local athletics by winning in a time of 13 minutes and 22 seconds ? knocking 16 seconds off her time from last year.
Her closest rival was fellow Warwick student and Front Street Mile junior champion Kyla Bolden, who slashed 36 seconds off her time from last year to finish in second. Saltus student Sara Schroder placed third.
In the boys? 13-15 division, Trey Simons finished 37 seconds in front of triathlete Brighton (BJ) Swan to record a resounding victory in a time of 23:21 over six kilometres.
Fairmont to Fairmont junior winner Shawn Herman came home third.
In a small girls? 13-15 group, Rebecca Heyliger won in a time of 27:40, compared to 28:48 last year. Heyliger has dominated the KPMG series since she became 11-12 age group champion in 2005.
Last year, she won every race in the series to claim the 13-15 title, though despite her significant success as a runner, Heyliger still considers swimming her best sport.
Finishing in second was Myrtia Eberly (28:58) followed by her sister Michaela (31:29).
The youngest age group of 8-10 had the largest representation with 58 children at the start line on the lawn outside Camden House.
Nakeno Creighton won the boys? 3K race in a time of 12:48 ? a substantial improvement over last year?s time of 13:09. He was well ahead of the second-placed Justin Ferreira and third-placed Jahmari Sutton.
The girl who really shone in the younger age group was Kyrah Scraders, who has demonstrated huge improvements in her year- to-year times.
She finished first on Sunday in 13:52, compared to 15:28 last year. In second place was Jordan Bascome and in third Aaliyah Nolan.
The next race in the six-race series will be the Bermuda Eye Institute 3K on Sunday, March 4.
