More big names out of Canada?s tournament side
Canada?s ICC Intercontinental Cup squad, due to take on Bermuda on Tuesday in Toronto, has undergone additional changes to the side that defeated the Island at last month?s ICC Trophy in Ireland.
Earlier this week chairman of Canadian national team selectors Austin Ward confirmed team skipper John Davison and Ian Billcliff, key components in Canada?s squad, had been ruled out for next week?s clash with Bermuda at Toronto Cricket Club in Ontario.
However, learned yesterday fast bowler Sanjah Thuraisingam has also been omitted from Canada?s squad, bringing the number of changes to three from last month?s team that defeated the Island by five-wickets in Ireland and four from last year?s Intercontinental Cup squad.
Davison is out with a broken finger while Billcliff and Thuraisingam are out through work commitments, according to Ward. Ashish Bagai, Ashish Patel and Austin Codrington are the remaining members missing from last year?s Canadian squad which lost by innings and 84 runs to inaugural Intercontinental Cup champions Scotland in Sharjah.
Both Codrington and Patel are out with undisclosed injuries while Bagai is currently employed in New York and cannot get the time away from work.
Coming in are all-rounders Qasir Ali and George Codrington for Davison and Billcliff, while medium pacer Eason Sinathamby has replaced fast bowler Thuraisingam.
But in spite of omissions to several key players, Ward is confident Canada can achieve their winning objective against Bermuda next week in Ontario.
?Certainly our team is a bit weaker than the one last year. But we have a lot of players to choose from so we can still put up a good competition and we will be ready,? he told
?It is always difficult to select teams. It?s never easy because some selectors want to choose their club player and another one wants a particular player and so it is never easy. But at the end of the day we all had to agree on the team that was selected and we are confident we can achieve our objective.
?I really don?t know much about the Bermuda team, but we have all the confidence in the new players that have been selected to our team.?
Bermuda drew with Canada at Sunnybrook Park last August with skipper Clay Smith stroking a timely 63 and Irving Romaine 40 while leg spinner Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock and medium pacer Ryan Steede led the Island?s bowlers in claiming four wickets apiece.
The ICC Intercontinental Cup, meanwhile, is a new tournament that provides top Associate Member countries from each region exposure to the longer version of the game.
All matches have first-class status with the top team from each region progressing to the semi-finals and final to be held in Namibia in October.
Teams are awarded 14 points for a win plus any bonus points accumulated while teams drawing or losing a match receive only their bonus points. Only in the event of a tie will teams pick up seven additional points.
Bonus points can be accumulated in either innings with a maximum of six batting points per innings awarded on the basis of 0.5 points for every 25 runs scored up to 300 runs. A maximum of five bowling points are available per innings allocated at 0.5 points per wicket taken.
To encourage teams to play for a result, the first innings of each side will be restricted to 90 overs unless the team batting first does not utilise its 90 overs in which case the team batting second can bat for its 90 overs plus the overs short of 90 not utilised by the team batting first.
A minimum of 105 overs must be bowled on the opening two days of the match.
